Lemon Meringue Pie.... Nailed it!!

last modified: 8 years ago

I am pleased to report that, after much searching and many trials, I have managed to re-create my Mother's Meyer lemon meringue pie; she won the blue ribbon 4 years in a row at the California State Fair; until she got bored and stopped entering. While my pies will not likely ever win any prize, anyone who actually knows how to make pie would be close.

Are you going to share the recipe?

I could give you the recipe; but then I would have to kill you!!.... just joking.

Better send samples so we can form our own opinions, give you feed-back.

    So to speak.

    Embo,

Feedback??? No one knows what the award winning pie tasted like.

Then how do you know you "nailed" it? lol I have a Meyer lemon tree with some almost ripe fruit. I may as well do something special with it so a lemon meringue pie sounds good.

Well, I for one know what it tasted like and I watched her make it many times.

baking??? in the tropics??? : - ) congrats John. I know how tough it is to recreate the old recipes. Many have been lost in my own family - - - needlessly!

i vote for sending samples out. Not to compare with the blue ribbon sample but for the general groups approval ;)

Congrats John. Must be a wonderful feeling to get it right. Your mom is probably smiling right now.

A pie done right can't be beat! Congrats, John!!

    John, you need to share!!!

John If I remember right you and I have a breakfast date at your favorite eatery sometime in 2050 to see who gets to laugh at who over our argument on global warming. I would like you to bring me a piece of pie of this kind. Do you have a favorite waitress that might enjoy waiting on us.

It's for that same exact reason that I insist on my mom to emulate her "eye measuring" process while I stand by with a notepad and measuring cups/spoons. I ask her to use the cups/spoons while pretending she is putting the ingredients straight into the pot/pan so I can have a rough outline for family recipes in the future. I would be really sad if I couldn't recreate the dishes from old memories

I also throw in a vote for sharing the recipe with us. At least for me, I promise to bake the award winning pie for personal uses only. It takes so long to make pie, I wouldn't make that many pies in a short period of time anyway :)

My Mother and my Grandmother never made less than 6 pies; for me 2 pies is a half day's work.

Haha I think I've only made 2 pies in my entire life and one of them was using canned purée and crushed graham crackers as a crust. Gotta love the lazy pies

    kvetch,

In my home environment (California) I BUY pie crust, I do not MAKE it.

Fair enough, I just prefer a crumbly crunch than a chew. And having a crumbly crust fused with butter, brown sugar and cinnamon makes a great lazy pumpkin pie!

Sounds delicious, I love pies and count my vote also for sharing the recipe :))

Am I the only one who makes extra filling to eat out of a cup? I even do this for lemon meringue pies! Lemon curd on toast, yum!

Kcandmilo, i didnt but now that lemon curd and toast sounds nice. I will have to try it.

How can you post about a pie recipe and not expect anybody to ask you to share the recipe? Now that is just cruel to everybody who owns a Meyer lemon tree.

Okay, anyone who wants the recipe can email me at meyerlemonjohn@hotmail.com

I am not yet ready to make this public domain; but those here on the forum I consider friends.

    Email sent. Thank you!

Glad you were able to reach your goal. I'm sure all that tasting was hard work ;)

I'll bet some kumquat slices on top would look pretty, even if your mom didn't do it that way. Just an idea ;)
