Help with Farmhouse Dining Room

After years of working on the "bones" of a 1836 farmhouse, its time for the fun part! I'm working my way through updating rooms and would love suggestions on this dining room. I am leaning more towards modern farmhouse and slowing turning over furniture pieces in the house that just don't go. I'd love some nice artwork but nothing too "rustic". Most of the fixtures and hardware has moved to oil rubbed bronze from all the brass that once dominated the entire house.

I'm also inheriting a dining room set that I am having professionally refinished/painted in a limestone and darker slate grey to add contrast to the neutral background. The queen anne set shown here is going! Also, please ignore the clutter as its a work in progress :-) I will be removing as much furniture as I can from the room to start fresh. I'd love some suggestions for carpet, artwork, drapes and upholstery for the chairs. Here are some pics of the room now - it original state was green/pink shimmer wallpaper, purple and pink painted trim. And the ceiling was wallpapered as well! (shudder). Sorry there are no before shots but I'll try to find a few old ones for amusement!!!

Thanks so much Houzzers!

Once you get your new dining room set in place post a picture and repost.

Thanks phuninthesun and Angel for the comments. I will get a sample of the finishes but here is the color chart.

Chairs in Limestone and base of table. Top of table will be Beachnut, a new gel stain color that is a lighter brown with grey undertones. When I saw it I thought it would be very versatile. The china cabinet will be the color Slate and the back insdie painted Limestone to pull in the other pieces.

The curtains can go if needed. Here are some of the sample fabrics I
am considering for the chair upholstery, and a lighting fixture that I
already own that I am thinking of swapping out for the existing one.

Thanks so much for taking a look at my early post. I'm too new at Houzz and don't want to go down a decorating path I can't live with.

    I've been following....

Go with a chair fabric that will be a bit more timeless. The top right Waverly or bottom left muted fabric. The bottom right IMO is Ikat and comes and goes.

The light as it appears where it sits is far too small for the table. A large lantern chandelier similar would achieve the look you like.

Take your new table length/width and your ceiling height is important as well with a lantern light as they are typically tall that your ceiling is not too low.

Darlana by Visual Comforts comes in several metal tons including a very dark bronze/black tone.

I like the chandelier in the gold tone. The black one looks as though it would smash through the table if it were to fall. Let's see how the curtains look if you push them back further and let them hang down straight. If you look at houzz rooms or other decorating venues you'll see that the tie back look is dead and gone, and frankly I always hated them.

I would first concentrate on picking out a carpet you love, which should be larger than the one you have right now. We need to see your new table and chairs also before any more decisions can be made.

Black accents... lots of white. Those are key elements in farmhouse decor. I'd suggest changing your window treatments for starters. A black french return rod with white cotton voile sheers. open the windows and let them blow in the wind! that to me is farmhouse!

The Waverly pattern for the chairs looks nice. It looks like you've got a nice dining room coming along. Keep us updated as to the progress.

So EXCITED! I got a glimpse of the furniture redo - they were able to recreate the wood/grey tone I so wanted to update the furniture (behind the samples)

    Before Wood (original)

After Wood (Beach Nut & Pewter stains)

They tried it out on one of the hidden drawers and it looks great! Here is a couple of pics as we are putting the new wood tone, chalk paint colors and the final choices for fabrics.

Looks very nice. I love both... I do love the Waverly fabric. Is it Graphite by Annie Sloan? What chalk paint are they using. I do a lot of chalk painting on antiques that are in semi poor repair. My husband fixes them up and then I paint them and often use use them to stage or I sell them to a local store a young lady owns and she marks them up and sells them.

The colors look nice with both fabric options. Just depends if you want a bit more depth on the chairs or keep it more simple with the top fabric.

I love the Waverly fabric next to the slate blue!

Have you considered a different wall paint color. Farmhouse usually is a shade of white on the walls. I'd for sure change out the curtains for much simpler, light colored. A good quality and weight of linen and black rods makes a big statement at a small expense.

Hi puremichigan60. It would really be tough for me to redo the paint at this point. Prior to the decorating part, I have literally had to paint the house from top to bottom. The house seemed very broken up and disjointed so this color is used through a few rooms to visually tie the space together. And you are right - light accessories, drapes will go a long way to keep it airy. Thanks so much for your suggestions.

I like the paint job you have no so no worries. I like the dark fixture and I think you'll need to replace the curtains. You must be so excited now.

I think much lighter curtains will give you the sun and airiness of a farmhouse vibe. And lighten the appearance of the walls as well.

Hello Houzzers - here is a first glimpse of the furniture that was redone for the dining room. Still working out some kinks :/ and the upholstery is in the works.

After a short shopping trip today (and a 20% off coupon :-) ) I found a interesting rug that might be a possibility after I see it with the chairs. The upholstered chairs arrive next week! Also found some beautiful, airy light grey linen drapes to replace the ones I have. Going to put those up tonight and see how things come together

The table and painted chairs and the china cabinet look great!

Are you moving away from the farmhouse look?

Have you changed from the Waverly fabric you showed with the paint colors on 9/28 to the multi-color floral above? Does the rug have any gray in it? I can only see gold and tan tones.

Hi My3dogs - i think i have been inadvertently moving away from farmhouse. :( I guess I'll dub it "farmhouse transitional" lol The rug indeed does have some grey in it and plays off the chairs. I hope it can work - it was such a good deal I for an 8x10 I had to at least try it on for size :-)

I am fairly partial to the area rug as long as there is a bit of gray in it which I can't tell. Also be sure when pushing back from the chair it stays on the rug otherwise when returning to the seat to sit pulling in the chair will get caught on the rug if the legs are off. I do love the British cane on your chairs. The room is looking so nice! Are you keeping the chandelier of eventually a new one?

The curtain looks nice and love the fabric choice... it 96" long enough? I'm sure you checked that!

Hello Porter - thanks for the comments. I'll try and post a better photo of the rug. Not married to it just needed something for a visual reference when trying to pull the room together. I had read a number of "rug" articles on Houzz. I had initially chosen a more rustic all over weave, but then was concerned about the chair legs, cleaning and cat factor :-( This size is definitely good and enough room for the chairs situation that you mentioned!

The curtains are definitely long enough, actually too long. So I need to decide whether to raise the rods or hem the drapes. They are long by about 5 inches which isn't a ton.

I want to replace the chandelier for sure and find some artwork that could work on the odd sized walls. One corner of the room is baffling me what to put there. It looks lonely. I have about 4 ft to work with there but not sure what to put. I am thinking to start I would anchor it with one of captains chairs and then some artwork above it. Thoughts??

I like the rug as long as you fell it pairs well with what your chair fabric will be.

Your current curtains puddle a little which looks nice to me. Maybe moving the rod 2", but it appears to be above the window frame now. If they are 4" above you could move them up to be at 6" above which naturally only gives you 2".

I believe I have the same curtains you chose in my eat in kitchen?? I purchased them at Home Goods I have 4 panels in each corner for fullness not function. I found the length on each was a bit off/different, but that's what you get sometimes at HG :) Hence, you may be pleased they are a bit long if that happens in your case as you can adjust.

mem2014, is the piece above your chair fabric?

    Pairs well with the chair/curtain.......

yes that's the fabric. I'm not sure what the rug will look like after the chairs show up.

That is my concern as well...... I wasn't sure if that was the chair fabric as I know way above you had others chosen.

mem, I'd focus now on the table/chairs/area rug and get it all done and then worry about the wall that is baffling you. You won't really know until you have the table/chairs/rug/curtains in what you may want. I don't think it's necessary to have to put something in every place in the room. It has a lot of beautiful windows, a lovely floor and IMO you've given it a lot of warmth so far and not every spot should be filled with a piece of furniture. Art, yes after all is done then other pieces of furniture perhaps..... I'd keep at the pace you are on and pluck away in order so you have the room you dreamed of having! It will be charming. After your chairs are in and you get the rug pinned down I would then go for the chandelier then on to the rest.

Can't wait for you to get those curtains up!

mem2014, what do you think of a thick sisal rug or a rug that mimics sisal yet is wool?

    mem2014 thanked Porter Edun

Hi Porter - Yes! that was one of the original choices I looked at. I would just need to find the size and right weave that would work. Where is the first one from? I haven't encountered a wool version of a sisal weave yet. Hopefully the drapes can get up tomorrow. I have a lot of final fall yard work to clean up. It never ends!

Rugs USA has it with the fringe. I used to own the same one and it was nice. They have a decent return program as well.

Comes in a few colors, but the natural looks best to me

Safavieh also sells the same rug as does Overstock.

The link above has a very nice rug, but it's a bit pricey IMO.

I hear you on the yard work! It's so cold suddenly I can't bring myself to get out and cut down my Peonies!
