Donna, I know this is a late reply. I don't think very many people come here anymore, but hopefully you'll get an email saying you've had a reply, so here goes:

I have borers whenever I grow squash. Between them and the squash bugs, and then those little lady-bug-looking things that are yellow instead of red infesting the flowers, squash is apparently one of the most sought-after places to hang out and feed for the bugs.

I have had good results with wrapping the stems of my squash, from the ground up, as far as I can get, and before you start seeing the moth flitting around. I have used foil before but it's not a perfect solution. I was just thinking that I could cut a plastic walmart bag in strips and wrap the stems with that, using tape to secure the ends. As I understand it, borers are larvae of a moth that flies in and lays eggs, so row cover might also work. We get a lot of wind here and so row cover for me is a bit challenging.

It is a good idea to check your squash stems daily. You might be out there, anyway, checking the under-sides of the leaves for those little round red squash bug eggs, laid so neatly in rows, in the narrow flat areas between two intersecting veins. Anyway, if you happen to see frass on the stem, you have a borer in the stem. Find the hole and work your way into it with the blade of a pocket knife (or something similar). Pretty soon you'll see something soft and wiggly and you'll be able to gouge that out. Then close up the wound and wrap it so it will heal. You might be able to save the plant, and you might not. It depends on a lot of variables.
