Should I hang curtains?

Hey Houzzers,

I know the lighting is not the best in this photo. I'm trying to decide if I should hang curtains in my dining room or not. On one hand, I think curtains would make the room look more finished. On the other hand, I think they also might make the room feel a little more "closed off." The windows are sliders that lead to a back patio. Please help - I would love your opinions. Thank you!

My opinion -- curtains to a room are like jewelry to an outfit. You don't NEED them and certianly some rooms look good WITHOUT them. But sometimes that extra pop of color or pattern is what makes a room.

I think your room is very nice. Do you have curtains in the adjoining rooms? That might help you make your decision.

I wouldn't for two reasons. 1. Your room is gorgeous 2. The space around your windows is too tight. The curtains will have to go right up against the mantle and will be smashed into the wall corners.

You don't need curtains. Looks great as it is.

    Sheers might be an option.

I agree that your windows/sliders look great without. I have cotton panels on each of my two sliders and, if you don't have enough space on each side, they can really get in the way when you come and go through the slider, esp. if a breeze causes them to billow.

I love your table and your chandy's. If it were my room, I'd use sheers as Pal suggests. What light you get would still come through and I think the room would be more formal if not looking out at patio furniture.

Just want to say I love your lights. I don't think I would put curtains up, but I do agree that some sheers might look good.

Without curtains it is looking not finished, hang a curtain for a finished look

the direction of your slider openings conspired against you. if they slid away from the fireplace, you could have one way draw panels also away from the fireplace, into the corners, would look nice and balanced. alas!

I wouldn't. You have a fireplace and a great view. Love the openness of your room.

You could put flowers or seasonal decorations on your table.

In my opinion, the space around the windows is far too narrow to add curtains. I love the natural lighting, and the room is visually stimulating as is :)

LOVE your room and the chandies are fabulous. If you can have curtains that do not impede the opening of your sliders I would go for it! I think it would be the final touch to a gorgeous room.

I would leave it as is. It seems open right now and I feel as though the curtains would make it feel more closed.

I don't think you need them. It would take away the light that you already have from the windows.

The natural lighting in the room is so good that curtains might ruin how open the space looks.

I wouldn't hang curtains. The natural lighting adds to your room.

I think the room looks great as is, but if you feel it's unfinished you could try a sweeping sheer over the top!

No way. Not enough space on the sides and the room looks great without them!

Here is a quick mock up. Not saying this is the color or way to hang. Just wanted you to see how it would maybe look.

I also like Pal's option of sheers. Although I think the room looks great as is, and i think heavy material would block too much light, I personally do not like the "black hole" at night effect from bare windows.

Thanks, everyone, for all the opinions and advice! I love this Houzz community! More of you definitely think I should NOT hang curtains. I'm still not 100 percent positive what I'm going to do, but I'll keep you posted!

I don't have curtains on my sliders or the windows in the same room. We have a private back yard like yours. I like it being open.

You don't mention where you live. If it's in an area that is sunny and green year around, leave it as it is; if you are in an area with "winter", get curtains.

how about panels on the end of each slider? drapes soften rooms, negating hard edges. an interesting rod placed high below the crown molding, say... white wood or black iron spanning the width of the slider ( enough bulk to counter the stone) but only hung on the out side edge of the slider, drapes in a quiet print, perhaps picking up other colors of adjoining rooms. not serviceable for sure, but may add some interest. your room is beautiful!

Your room is beautiful. Curtains don't seem necessary, and may get in the way.

If you do decide to put up any, we think sheers are the way to do. You can see that they add to the dining room and give it the added something that it might be missing, but they are not necessary in yours.

What about a rod with a scarf valance that is asymmetrical..short on the fireplace side, longer on the other side?
