Selective Pruning

I've never done selective pruning on old wood hydra. Just cut the dead stems from winter and tidy it up, depending on the dieback of the stems to the buds. And or just pruning on the bottom to give it shape.

I did heavy pruning this spring and it leafed out crazy this year. I gave the Hydra a haircut 2 weeks ago, to open her up and get some light inside.

What's your regimen on old wood hydra. Leave it alone and just prune out stems to the base on due course. Do you selectively prune not only for blossom stem growth direction BUT actually to open her up so that there are pockets of light all summer....

In retrospect, as I look at the Hydra, and with me taking out 2 large stems and a haircut, I'm thinking that selective holes throughout the entire summer season might not a bad thing moving forward, as it allows the new growth to flourish better .

Thoughts, suggestions, sage old advice ?
