What is the flavor like?

Wonderful!!! Juicy and sweet, with just a hint of tomato tartness. I am having trouble with about 1/3 of them cracking, but I probably overwater here in the desert. The rest of my crops in the green house seem to need more water than the tomatoes.

Sounds good! Try picking them before you water ;)

There are a few things Peggy didn't mention about Jasper, a primary reason I won't be growing them again anytime soon. First is the tiny size fruit. It takes twice as long to pick a gallon as it does most other cherry varieties because of the small size and the sporadically located fruits on the plants. Also, the variety, although Late Blight resistant, is not a great producer under normal growing conditions.

I think of Jasper as a wild tomato that one might have imagined as one of the first tomato plants to exist on the planet. Mine exceeded 20 ft. Height in my high tunnel and required frequent care for the modest harvest.

Oh I hate those tiny currants! However, Tania's Tomato Base sells an OP variety of Jasper that she says is "saladette" size with outstanding flavor!

Well thanks Barrie and Linda. That is certainly a different perspective and true when I think about it. I am just growing for family and friends, but the Jaspers do take a long time to pick for sure. What variety of cherry tomatoes do you prefer? Also what variety of full size tomatoes do you have luck with? I have tried Rutgers, but they take forever to ripen for me, and seem to be prone to diseases. Jet Star has not done well either. I am having good luck with Juliet grape tomatoes.... And we grow some Sweet Treats although this year they do not seem to be as sweet as 2 years ago when I grew them. Peggy Hamill, Taos, NM

I LOVED Blush this year - sweet and fruity. It's an elongated cherry about 2" long.

If you like sweet red cherries, Sweet Aperitif might fit the bill - and then there is always Sungold F1. You cannot go wrong with that, although it splits for some people and they recommend Sun Sugar F1 instead (same flavor, I hear), fruity and zingy.

When I grew Juliet F1 I found it very acidic :(

Eva Purple Ball

Rose

Pruden's Purple

Little Lucky is fabulous, but later to ripen

Once I'm growing 28 cherry/grape varieties I won't list them all but Sakura is at the upper limit for fruit size, close to an ounce. I'm growing Sweet Aperitif this year but may drop it from the list because those are also variably smaller fruits and lack the other flavor components that complement sweetness. If you've tried Sunsugar or Sungold you'll know what I mean.

Growing 66 larger fruited varieties and although most varieties are heirlooms the most plants are hybrids. Torero, BigBeef and Caimen are ones I have the most of and I like all three.
