Any guesses?

I bought 5 roses on a whim from Walmart. They were on clearance for $2. They were unloaded off the rack and right to the clearance area because they were beat up. They had new growth and at least one had buds. They're pretty fugly right now, but with some TLC and a few weeks I think they'll make a nice hedge for an even fuglier chain link fence.

I checked the website for Dewar and the only similiar roses I saw were from their Duet series (obviously this is not). The two closest were SEXY REXY and TOURNAMENT OF ROSES.

Any guesses as to what I brought home?

Thank you. I would love it if that's the case. BD would make a nice healthy hedge. I'll upload some photos of the foliage and buds

    I'll contact Dewars also.

Hmmm, just based off the pic I would say queen Elizabeth. It's also a fairly common rose to find in big box stores, at least where I live.

Dewar's has replied promptly to email inquiries for me, too. Their roses have been very well grown & thrived here. They usually have tags on each rose at or beneath the soil line, the kind that make a circle drawn through a slit on the tag itself & often an additional ID stake pushed down in the soil along the side of the pot. Look for those. Even roses with hangtags of Yellow Rose or Red Rose (lol) had identifying circle & stake markers.

Local Walmart has a tiny garden section, but Dewar's roses show up here at Lowe's in a fairly wide range of varieties (for this Lowe's). Those bought as markdowns - for lack of care - all responded to standard TLC. Great buy on your new roses! Sue

Thank you! I'll look for it. I put it in morning sun, watered it and it's already responding. They are big roses, just had a rough time in transport.

It is a beautiful pink. It isn't Tournament of Roses. That is more coral

You got a great deal for sure

I'm thinking it's too large to be Sexy Rexy. I think Belinda's Dream is most likely. Possibly Queen Elizabeth but the pictures of QE's buds don't look the same and it looks like it's blooms are more ruffly, but who knows how true the buds etc are right now.

That could be. I'll check it out.

*edit* I'm not finding it under Pretty Dancer. Do you have a link to that picture?

I saw it on the palatine website

    Thank you. I'll check.

I think I have a good email for Dewars.

Sorry, foliage doesn't look like Belinda's Dream to me, it is too smooth. Also BD has longer sepals on the bud

It kind of looks like some of the pictures of Quitness, but some of those have yellow tones at the center and the pink might be lighter.

    It has plenty of thorns.

Dewar replied that it is First Prize. They were really quick.

Well First Prize is a winner. A whole. Hedge is going to look fabulous. I'm glad you got your answer

I hope it stays clean enough. I'll post pictures once it's up and going.

I know this is a late reply, and I hate to argue with Dewar, but it doesn't look much like First Prize to me. Too many petals plus no variation in color, and the color is too light. The pictures of the buds are way too round, IMO. First Prize is one of my favorites to grow here in AZ where its pretty clean for me, but we don't have nearly the level of Black Spot problems.

Dan, you're correct - it's definately not FP, though the picture in the tag might be. Dewars only had the tag picture to ID.

I bought two of these today for $3.68 each. Exact same label too. But I had a couple of blooms on them. Clearly not FP. Looks like Summer Romance, smells terrific. Horribly pruned in the hands of either the nursery or Walmart but the price was right.

    I also think Summer Romance!

The new growth on it this fall is really beautiful! Even if I do think she is one odd chick!

That's good to read, GA Gal, because the plants I have are not pretty so far. I hope they pretty up when they put on some new growth.

Here she is in a pot

This is a picture of the crazy arms she grows. The plus side is that they are pretty much straight up.
This arm is about 7 ft. tall.

Yes, this is a great read for me, too. I bought SR at Home Depot and have been waiting for cooler temps before planting her. Looks like she’s gonna be a big girl! Lisa

Lisa, others were posting that she did not bloom much, but I have not found that to be the case. I planted her in the spring, a puny HD buy. (impulse) She immediately shot out 3 super tall canes and bloomed. (like 6 feet) I cut them off after the bloom and now one is about 8 ft with little blooms on it. She is also very drought tolerant. I stuck her in a random place to fill a hole. Really dry baking sun in the am with a little shade during the day, then full sun from about 3 on. HOT. I have rarely watered her.

That has been the case for the one I planted last springx Mine is not a very good example because it's leggy and weird from being in way to much shade.. and yet it's been a decent bloomer. I think it will be amazing in the sun. The hedge of SR is planted is in full sun so I am excited to see how it blooms.

Suncoast, you got lucky that they responded at all, lol.

Dewars, like many other wholesalers, will often buy up grab bag promos from the large growers at the end of the season. The catch is that they rarely know what the plant is, so they put generic labels on the plants and send it out to market. I once bought a Correta Scott King with one of these generic labels for under $10 from Lowes. The generic labels are also used when the wholesaler wants to liquidate a crop of labeled roses cheaply. By selling it under a generic label they save the money they'd have to pay the growers for the name royalty rights. That's why you will often see the same rose sold at Home Depot at $18 and $12 with the only difference being that the more expensive one has the name of the rose and the cheaper does not. Based on the fact that the Summer Romance series didn't sell that great at Lowes and that the market was saturated with the line (and also because I have a few of these roses along with Belinda's Dream) I would agree that it's probably an unlabeled Summer Romance rose. Belinda's leaves are much smaller and her buds are pointier.

    Enjoy!

    -Adrian.
