Need help on how to mask the eyesore behind us

Our neighbor built a pool house 5 feet from our shared wall. It extends the entire length of our yard. From our kitchen, we can't even see the sky. How can we mask this eyesore so we can enjoy our yard again.

I don’t know where you live, but I can’t believe your town’s building codes are much different from mine.

Setbacks! The pool house you are showing…I am going to bet they constructed it with out a permit.

Before you get more upset (and I don’t blame you), go to your building department and inquire about it. If your neighbors did indeed by pass the town, then the town will take care of it.

My girlfriend just went through this…she went to the building dep’t. and no he had not pulled a permit and the inspector came to the house and informed him to tear it down (within so many days) and for each day after that if were still standing the would be per diem fine.

She never had to confront the neighbor herself, which was a relief.

I just googled “setbacks” for my town:

"Setbacks for ACCESSORY buildings are 25’ on the street side; for side line, rear line and other buildings the setback is equal to the HEIGHT of the structure."

I see that building going away…

We live in Las Vegas. The neighbor who built the eyesore is a builder and it was fully permitted. We no legal recourse that I know of. All we can do is try to mask it.

If its your wall ..I would put some trellising up and a wisteria or clematis on it !

so, the landscaping is yours, the fence is yours, your issue is with the building peeking over the fence?

for an eyesore its not too bad.. not nearly as bad as a previous poster who had the neighbors RV parked on their lot line. substitute taller shrubs for your shorter ones.

I am hoping for you…I just briefly scanned codes in Clark County….and I read what I think is the same code which applies to me…20’ foot set back from property line for “accessory buildings”.

I can’t believe any town would allow a structure like that to go up…basically infringing on your privacy…i.e. what if there were windows in that building?

Even the height of your wall has code restrictions…

At best, your neighbor is thoughtless. I really feel for you.

You are right, it could be a lot worse. We still have our privacy. Problem is, our yard is a lot lower than all of the neighbors so when we build, we were dealing with very tall walls in the first place. Now with this lovely addition, it's just disappointing is all.

It preserves and enhances your privacy. I actually think it's a pretty considerate design given the constraints of small lot living. Talk to a landscape professional about adding additional green if it bothers you too badly in 6 months.

I would invite your neighbor over for coffee, ice tea, at your pool. Maybe even invite other neighbors over. You have a lovely home, I would find a way to show him the effect on your property.

The shrubs and trees that you have now will take care of this problem very quickly, you won't even remember it's there.
You can only expect to see sky everywhere if you own an acre lot, this goes for all countries. I'm a realtor and have seen it all.
BTW very nice landscaping and paving ;-)
