Beardeds need about 6 weeks to put down a root system before frosts come.

I ordered some irises from Clark Gardens. Small order. Just 5. Was disappointed that one of the rhizomes was very small and decayed - it smelled awful! I'm calling them tomorrow to request a replacement. First time customer here.

Oh no! I have some irises that I've purchased locally and was planning to get them planted this week. We're predicted to have our first frost next week here in the Kansas City area.... will they be damaged?

I just received my replacement irises. They were small, but they sent two of them. I'm hopefully that they will come up. Good luck with your irises.

If I get mine planted in the next day or so... Can I cover them during a frost night? Usually around here we get a frost, then it warms up for a while before the weather changes for good.

I don't think you need to cover them up. As long as the rhizome is exposed to the sun, it should be fine. I've planted irises, tulips, lilies and daffodils all around this time and they've always come up the following year.

Ok... well I’ll hope for the best. Thanks bella rosa. They will definitely get plenty of sun where I’m planting them - near some newly planted peonies. After I put in the peonies, I thought some irises would be nice too, and ran out to the nursery and bought some iris “bulbs” (I know they’re not really bulbs)... but didn’t realize they probably needed to be planted back in September, or earlier.
