What kind of root disturbance? I think that is the reason for slowing down? five fruits don't seem a whole lot to me since they are so small anyways

The Meiwa is the slowest growing citrus/fortunella tree out their. give if 5 -7 years for good fruiting.

I have read that kumquats need high temps to make the sweetest fruit. And another comment (by one of the FL AgExtension agents) that they need high temps for growth, as well. So that slows things down for those of us not in hot places.

I got my Meiwa last spring and repotted it in July. It flowered and set those 5 fruits. Between the root disturbance this spring (critters) and a repotting mishap several months later, neither of those are good things, of course. I kept it semi shaded while it recovered from those, also slowing growth.

But I also wonder if I should have removed the fruits the first year.

Maybe I'll get lucky with a few flowers/fruit yet this year?

Well, fingers crossed that it wakes up next spring, ready to bust out with some lush new growth :)

Susanne, is your Meiwa well branched out? Heating pad would help the plant, the air above soil should be warm also. The temperature of the soil and the temperature of the room the tree is growing in, the amount of light it's receiving, all that should have a balance.

No, not so well branched I would say. There will be a lot of light. Temps at around low 60's at night and to high 70's or low 80's depending on sunshine or cloudy. Not so sure about the floor temperature.

I am wondering about temps and dormancy. I need to look for specifics on how it works. Kind of interesting that it is the only citrus that does it.

Hibiscus I thought all citrus are capable of growing year round and not really going dormant?

If your Meiwa is on Poncirus or its own roots it will go dormant. It will keep its leaves unless it gets to cold but not cold enough to kill the tree. The loss of leaves is still very damaging to the tree's energy stores.

Dormant if temps are right? I heard that if I keep poncirus warm, will not loose any leafs but will continue to grow. I have no idea what rootstock is used on Meiwa. Time to find out
