Livingroom Fireplace... HELP!

My goal is to hang a 60" TV above the fireplace. I know, I know everyone is going to suggest not to, but for entertaining purposes I would like to. As of now, hanging a TV above the mantle would be nearly impossible and if possible, I would break my neck trying to watch it.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

I was considering lowering everything. Demo the hearth, maybe make it flush or completely do away with a hearth all together. If I lower everything, do I also bring down the fireplace opening?

Would you just do away with a mantle? Demo the bricks holding the mantle up and place the TV in front of the old mantle instead of shifting everything down?

I would also like to find a solution to hide the wires from TV to cable box. Maybe drywall the top of the brick to run wires behind? Also need to figure out a home for the cable box and such. Any ideas?

I'd like to put a gas insert in. How difficult would it be to convert from wood burning to gas? I already have gas in the home. I know I would have to run a new line to the fireplace but would it be worth it? What about ventalation? Is that something I can do down the road if its too costly now? As hanging the TV is my main goal.

I'm open to any and all ideas.. I'm okay with keeping the brick or covering it in some manner. I know some will say the brick is dated, but it is a brick colonial home. I'm trying to stay considerable traditional with a little contemporary/modern twist. I plan on buying furniture from Pottery Barn if that helps with style.

Maybe something like this but can I leave my brick at the bottom instead of stone to save money? Also would like a smaller mantle, I'd like the TV as low as possbile without looking odd. What are your thoughts?

I can't see how the cord situation will be handled. Are you interested in $1000 worth of drywall and electrical work just to keep from putting the TV on a long wall?

First off love the flooring. You can definitely keep the brick remove the mantle and paint the fireplace a semi gloss white (preference: swiss coffee) then paint the wall around the fireplace an accent color not to shiny like an eggshell sheen.

Second, try a media stand on the right wall. A long one about 70 inch. Glass if you're looking for modern. and only one sofa adjacent from the TV.

If this really is what your mind is set on and you're willing to pay for the canges, you should go with it. It's really not a bad idea you have and the solutions you already put in are quite nice. Red brick and white or grey paneling works I think. I really like the lay out also.Just make sure you get the electrical work done properly.

My only extra suggestion would be to consider hanging the TV in such a way that you can hide it if you're not interested in whatching but would like to hang in front of the fire place. The layout you suggest can also be a great spot to entertain and have some great conversations. I always think a big black screen isn't really adding to the cosy evening you might plan in the future.

If you already have gas in the house, a gas insert would be relatively painless to install. Venting would have to be done at the same time as installation.

Some things you need to think about are:

1) the condition of your chimney - venting would have to run down your chimney, and if it's in bad shape, you might have to spend extra to get it to code.

2) fireplace clearances - all fireplaces require items like mantels and TV's to be a certain distance from the fireplace opening. You need to decide on a fireplace before you drop your mantel down.

Go to your local fireplace retailer and get a quote on what this might end up costing you.
