I can identify. I have been sitting on the fence about getting a Shiranui as well from Harris. When yours comes in, post a pic. It might push me into buying one as well before winter comes.

Nancy did you talk to Ruth? Are thy cleared for shipping out of state? My order is on hold till spring. Getting ruby red, xan shi, citrumelo, variegated minneola and calamondin. Because of hurricane everything got delayed.

I take prescription medicine to protect me from Citrus Sickness. Last year I got vaccinated for CS but the doctor told me that I would only be safe with the Medicine as a booster protection.

I talked to Ruth yesterday and the FDA has not cleared them for shipping outside of Florida . She has no idea how long it will take and The USDA is short on personal, so who knows how long it will take.. I do know that Brite Leaf recently had their inspection and it passed, and has the go ahead to ship outside of Florida now..

I have a pending order with Harris that has been on hold for over three weeks now.. If they do not have the inspection passed within a week I will need to put it on hold till spring also.

Earlier this morning, before Susanne's post, I took the plunge and ordered a Shiranui because, at this time of year, the growth has to be better than the picture on the website. I sent a message indicating to cancel my order if it won't be shipped until spring. Here is Ruth's response:

"We have not heard from USDA Risk Assessment yet as to when we will be able

to ship. They have inspected all our greenhouses and taken all samples

necessary. They are in the processes of doing their risk assessment, but we

have not received word yet. They could give their determination today or

next week. I am not sure who is advising this and how they would know. We

would be happy to cancel your order if you wish. Please advise.

After seeing Susanne's post, you would think some sort of notice would be posted on the website if orders cannot be filled ASAP. I am waiting for a return phone call and will also inquire if the excess rain from Huricane Irma has affected the quality of their plants. It doesn't help that another hurricane or tropical storm is expected. I will probably cancel the order if it cannot be filled this year because anything can happen between now and then.

Denise, it is good to know that at least the USDA came by and took the tests.. Thank you for posting.

Woke up to all the posts and thanks everyone. Did not know about the FDA restriction but will keep fingers crossed that the word will be positive in the next few weeks or so. I had enclosed a note with my order to Ruth that if the condition of tree end-of-season or post-Irma is not so great, to put my order on hold until the spring.

I'm not concernd at all. After Ruth told me about the situation, I just put the ruby red on hold and added a couple of trees. Ruth told me she put the group together and mark them sold. Just waiting for spring :).

Just got off the phone with Ruth and she is very nice! She said the trees are grown in green houses and Hurricane Irma did not affect any of them. USDA has to inspect all the nurseries in Florida as a precaution. After speaking to her, I am comforted knowing root rot from rain will not be an issue for me. I left the order as is.

I ordered the 3 gallon knowing by spring that it would be upgraded to a 5 gallon plant if it was still on their grounds.

Lol.. thanks Vladimir, I meant USDA!! I will correct that mistake! For some reason I wrote down FDA in my notes after talking to Ruth! :)

I told my 24 y/o daughter that I ordered another citrus tree. Her response was, "do you really need another one?" I then told her that it was a Sumo. Well, her attitude then immediately changed. The reason why was because Ulta uses it in their cosmetic products. Then she said if it originated in Japan, it must be good. Quite amusing don't you think? lol

My favorite sport show to watch while in Japan was Sumo. Of course I had to get one.

I have never ordered from Harris before so I have a question regarding shipping because there isn't much on the website about it. Is there some type of notification from Harris Nursery that the order was shipped? Ruth mentioned she uses FedEx. Does FedEx automatically send emails to the recipient of a package with a tracking number?

Denise, you should receive a process notification order from Harris and also a email from FedEx with tracking # once the package is ready for processing.

Is the shiranui cold tolerant?

Congratulations! I had not seen this post, but was just admiring how much my dekopon (from Harris) is growing and has grown. I got it maybe late spring last year and it was pretty, but had a weak trunk and flopped over. I trimmed it and staked it loosely and within 6-8 months it was standing on its own. It is now a lovely, lush tree and has one full-size fruit and smaller one also. However, with the growth explosion now it is full of buds. I’ll take a pic when it’s not so bright out. I think it’s a good choice and hope Harris is cleared for shipping soon. All the trees I have from them are great trees.

Laura LaRosa, I am so used to ordering from FW that I was afraid to order from any other company no matter the cost. Unfortunately, FW doesn't carry all the varieties I want so I have to expand my horizens. lol. I have seen great referrals for Harris so I took the plunge.

Denise, way to go! Jonny, your tree looks great and am sure it will grow like crazy in the ground. Here are pics of mine...going crazy at the moment. There are buds on every tip!

Laura, looks great! I ordered on from harris a few months ago but it fried in shipping and a replacement is suposed to be coming as soon as the weather is cooler and they are cleared. The first one looked like it was nice before shipping killed it.

That Shiranui is spectacular! So full and lush. I was a little concerned about some Gardenweb photos of Harris' Shiranui that looked like their trunks were weak. You validated my concern. Figure I'll just deal with it if it shows up like that. In the continental US I'm about as far away as you can get from Florida, so I should be more worried about shipping damage than anything else.

Going to stay excited for now!

I cannot wait to get my tree. If they got the green light on Friday from USDA, then everybody who is waiting for a shipment will get notification by Tuesday. I did inquire about the possibility of their adding New Zealand Lemonades to their inventory. She said Florida was not a state that was allowed to have it, but when it was, they would. I do not understand why not and regret not asking.

Thanks for the reassurance about the trunk Laura. I like "doing incredibly well" over showy too. I'll post a pic when it arrives.

2 years ago Florida passed a law making Kuharske Citrange citrus rootstock illegal because of it's susceptibility to HLB. I am going to guess that NZL is susceptible to HLB also.

Laura did you keep the trunk free of growth? I hear so many different opinions and just not sure what to do. My Sambukan is growing really everywhere and also on the trunk new growth. Some say leave it to strengthen the trunk and others think it would be better to keep it clean. Your tree looks beautiful and just wondering what you did??

Susanne, I did leave any lower branching bc I’ve heard Silica explain it strengthens the nearby area. I only initially clipped an upper branch from the canopy bc it was just too heavy and lopsided.
