Little Bottlebrush never blooms-Need Advice

Hi All,

We had these two bottlebrushes for over a year now. They never bloom and always look like they are dying. I'm no green thumb and neither is my wife. They get mostly fully light starting around 11am when the sun gets to the back of our building until sun down. We live in LA. We are watering them three gallons once a week. Sometimes during the week with an extra gallon. They are currently in cactus mix because that was recommended. Any tips as to why we can't help these plants? Thank you!!!

Hi there icenet333,

Some things to consider would be, have your been pruning too often, and could have pruned forming flowers off the plants ?

Perhaps the cactus mix is lacking in the necessary nutrients for the plant to be able to flower. If I were you I would research what fertiliser would be appropriate for Callistemon, you could look for a low phosphorus fertiliser in your garden centre.

You could also consider repotting the plants that always seems to cheer up my plants.

Thanks for the response. I never prune. They recommended cactus mix but at this point it seems as if it's not the best. I just think the plants will never look good.
