I am more bothered by the wall hangings than any thing. Are you open to rearranging sectional a little. That would come first, then rug, possibly some furniture piece. Could be coffee table or a sofa table behind sectional to provide a spot for a lamp. You are lacking contrast so color of a more intense variety is in order. If you could post room measurements and length and width and depth of each sectional piece, I could do a scale layout for you to give you some new, creative ideas.

Hello. In my opinion, here, definitely, the rug and a coffee table is necessary. If I chose a rug to this room, then I would choose it in light tones, and it would be square. And the coffee table would be similar to this:

The biggest investment in your living room is the sectional and the chair. The cheapest investment is the paint.

I think you need to embrace the colors in the sectional and the chair and do not go with suggestions that fight the furniture.

Milano Doors (post above) picked out a good coffee table with light tones which is the direction you need to go to tie into and to repeat the camel color on the sectional. The point here is that you need to repeat the colors in the sectional, and add colors that compliment your biggest $$ investment.

A rug is also needed in a color lighter than camel; a jute rug in a light tan/light camel. Follow the picture below for the colors needed in the pillows: brown paisley, brown suede, black and an off-white. Say goodbye to the taupe and gray pillows and definitely repaint walls in Benjamin Moore Simply White.

I came up with a pretty creative way to "re-invent" your room. So I did a little mock up. I am not crazy about the sectional, so I tried to do other things that would enhance the room and reduce the impact of the sectional visually. Here is a little "mock up" for you. Not sure if you can paint the walls, but here is a new technique that is relatively easy to do, but quite interesting.

It is called an Ombree treatment. You start with a soft color at the top and work your way down in an ombree type look. Then I would use the little shelf's if they are permanent, to just set one to no more than 3 items and put one large piece of art on the wall above the long side of the sofa. I would add color and pattern with pillows. I would pick up the color from the walls and do a rug that fits under the front legs of the sofa and runs out to the end of the right side of the sofa at least. I found this inexpensive white coffee table that would add an interesting shape and bring some brightness against the darker elements in the room. Of course, art is very personal, and I believe some of the pieces you have on these shelves might be your personal work, so perhaps you can do something larger for the wall. Too many small items just make things look cluttered and not cohesive. Hope this gives you some inspiration! Enjoy.

btw, you can find YouTube videos teaching how to do this Ombree wall treatment. In any case, more color on the walls is needed to balance the deep colors in your furniture.

It looks like everyone on this thread is trying to get you to do various floor or wall treatments which will take the eye off the sofa. Looks like the sofa is the 800 pound gorilla in the room. Perhaps consideration should be given to redoing the sofa or replacing it.

i personally do not feel that the sofa is the main event of a room, no? I think your soft things-pillows, rugs, curtains are the main decorations. Unless you have original art work? other than that, i see the soft things that really make the room. many sofas are big black leather blobs, etc. or they are monotone, dull neutrals. it is the rest of the room that makes it something special. i think that if you look through the threads here, people who think of their sofas as the stars of the room, later feel something is missing.

It looks like your sofa can separate. Have you tried 3 pieces along the back wall and a single armless piece on the right wall and then use the ottoman as your coffee table? Add a nice tray to set drinks on? I think that would make the sofa less obtrusive and you wouldn't have to purchase a coffe table. You may be able to add an end table between sofa and door.

be very careful of online vendors that seem to post abundant side bar and such, advertising. It enhances their name recognition, but it may be just to emphasize the quantity of a wide variety. Be aware of their return policy's and due diligence regarding reviews of actual customers or actual items you might think look like a good value. Pictures or quality can enhance or detract by the time you receive it and superior customer service can transform any misfortune into a miracle. I love your room!! Good post!

This may be redundant, but can you flip the sectional? It is in front of the door and is blocking it somewhat, so you need to more the sectional.

Hi, thank you all for your suggestions! It's been really helpful! Initially, I thought of replacing the sectional because as most of you noticed, the sectional is quite huge. But my husband is stuck/loves the couch, along with the paintings. Paintings are from a local artist. I have also tried re-organizing the sectional around, but didn't find a combination that I really liked. However, I'm up to trying again. I'll work on getting the measurements tomorrow. I have thought of re-painting the walls white, but hesitated. However, I do like the idea of re-painting the walls to white. Attached a reference picture of the front door. Please ignore my husbands misc items on the floor by the front door.

I'm leaning towards a warm neutral wall colour, some kind of mushroom tone perhaps. I think white would look stark against the existing furniture.

you usually do not pick a wall color til after your room decoration is done. i for one have been decorating with that blue included. would you change the way you decorate the room once you painted a new color? if so, we need to know that paint color.

With that little short wall at the entry door, it is going to limit your furniture arrangement. A lighter color on the walls IMO isn't going to do much except make everything look paler. You need some contrast. Plus if you keep the sectional, it is all warm colors so pure white will not look right with it. If you go to an off white, go with a warm off white. Try a sample of SW Aged White 9180. Has warm undertones. Since the furniture is limiting factor, perhaps a sofa table or two behind the long wall of the sofa would give you additional space for some lighting that is at a lower level and would give your room a warmer feeling.

This is an example of a beige and off white room with stronger taupe wall color in a small room. I think the wall behind the sofa could handle this type color and it would look so much more interesting than a white or off white.

May I address another issue I see? I like your art, but I think it needs a makeover on how it's arranged and hung on the walls. The two little shelves are just not working well imo. They look cluttered with too much on them and being both off center and uneven is throwing the balance off. And I think everything is hung a little too high. In a living room, the best practice is to have art more at eye level when seated, so that is usually around 4-6 inches above the sofa.

I don't think we've seen pictures of all 4 walls yet, so I can't quite figure out how to arrange things, and whether or not you have some space where items can be relocated, or if there is more that needs to be considered in the mix.
