Ceiling

What do you call this type of ceiling. I have seen this architectural element in other high end homes. Specifically, it looks like there is a faux ceiling built on top of the actual ceiling. I like the look, but what purpose does it serve? Does it act as a chase for electrical, HVAC, etc? Thank you for the response.

This ceiling is custom designed to be unique and serves various purposes above and beyond just aesthetics. We greatly appreciate your interest however, due to the fact that this is a fully custom designed home and the privacy policy we have in place with each of our clients, we are unable to provide exact details and specifications on our designs. Thank you!

Thank you for the quick response! I just wanted to make sure this wasn't a standard architectural element, a la "trey ceilings" or "drop ceilings" - sounds like it isn't. Thank you again.
