Clone a tree

If I make a cut in the wooden branch (not green branch) of a tree, put a funnel like thing around that branch, fill the funnel with soil and water it regularly, will the roots grow from this branch so that I can detach it from mother tree and start a new tree? Or will I have to use a green branch. thanks

Really depends on the species of tree. What you describe would work with a willow but not an oak.

Oak tree will not root even if green branch is used? What about fruit plants as most of fruit plants are cloned and what about japanese maple leaf tree? thanks

Google air layering. Lots of information out there. The only information that I haven't been able to find about it is exactly which plants work and which don't. People usually say just about anything will work, but I'm sure there are things that don't. It's recommended for things that are hard or impossible to propagate from cuttings.
