How cold can it get

before unripe tomatoes are damaged?

I have been playing my annual game of garden chicken - should I pick them all unripe or should I wait a few more days to let a few more turn.

I may have missed the boat last night. I live in central Maine. The last two nights have been in the 30s - but nights in the forties are in the forecast. I covered my peppers, picked all the tomatoes with color, harvested my squash....

While many neighbors have had a killing frost I haven't (or perhaps hadn't) yet. Basil turned black, tops of tomatoes lightly damaged, winter squash plants ugly but still green, very minor damage to pepper plants.

Rightly or wrongly I prefer to pick the tomatoes that are already turning. So I am wondering approximately what temps can a green fruit tolerate before damage?

Varieties: Magic Mountain, Pineapple, Sungold, Jasper, Principe Borghese, Cherokee Purple, Orange Banana and Amish Paste
