Looking good..no idea, there are many small crabs around, could be a no name cultivar. I'd be interested how long these stay on the tree into winter...good for wildlife.....not many this size stay on for long like the small ornamental ones.

By their size color and the leaves they look much like Dolgo crab apples. I made jelly and spiced crabs from the fruit when we had our trees. The birds loved them. Some that had fallen and started to ferment were especially liked by them even if it did make them tipsy

Don't think so, Dolgo are darker apples.

Konrad, I likely will return to the plantation later this year and will check to see if it retains the crabs into winter. I have another unnamed crab in my yard that my Dad grew from seed to use as root stock. The fruit size is mixed, ranging from 1/2 inch to 1 inch and stays on the tree well in to winter. I'd guess it is mostly siberian crab.

This is one of my seedling crab, picture took yesterday, good size, pink flesh and juice..I used some to blend cider..about half have fallen now, twice got hit with around minus 10C.

Second picture above, red flesh seedling crab has held some of it's fruit and Bohemian Waxwing were feeding on it this weekend.

I think not every year it's the same in how well they hold onto the tree..might have to do with how well they ripen, moisture during the season, [I don't water] and timing of frost..many factors play a part, also wind, these were exposed to several heavy wind and I'm surprised how well they held on considering being a good size crab.

Here is a picture of the crab taken January 18, 2018 (likely Siberian) my dad grew for root stock. The shriveled fruit are 1/2" to 3/4" diameter. The deer have cleaned the bottom branches bare.

These ornamental crab stay on better and birds prefer...mine are all gone and feeding on the larger ones now.

Yesterday I was pleased to see Bohemian Waxing still eating on this tree..
