Hutch? Chairs? Table? Can't wait to paint the walls. That blue/grey was recommended to me about 3 years ago but I've never liked it. It's dull and sombre. My family room and kitchen are golden and I LOVE it.

Start by priming the walls in white, you may need two coats to cover the blue. Then try the same golden color in here. The furniture will look great with it. The dining set is charming, and if it is not your style, look at some new styles or in consignment stores. Are you planning to change the chandelier at this point? The room would look fresher without the faux plant. Try an arrangement of gourds and mini pumpkins for fall.

It's a real plant but yes, I think I'll move it! I think maybe I'll soften the golden so that the whole main floor doesn't yell out "YELLOW!" and so that my daughter doesn't shoot me ha ha. The chandelier is new. Much better than the ancient piece that was there for 26 years.

i'd paint (actually, prime) right away. you can't think when the walls are that color. then repost, with a photo of the 'golden' color too.

unless you need the 5th chair on a weekly basis, store it elsewhere in your home.

Thanks for info. I think the real tree leaves were reflecting the blue paint, so they looked bluer than normal. The yellow gold is pretty. It will pick up the colors in the chandelier glass shades. You could sample one shade lighter on the same paint card as the kitchen's yellow gold if you wanted a bit of subtle change. Use a foamcore board for sampling once you have primed the walls.

I don't know what your preferred style is, but your furnishings lend themselves to a cottage style. If this was my space, I would consider a tall white wainscot. That is not necessary - I've been thinking about one for my dining room for a long time.

The mid-tone wood against white looks crisp, but the wainscot gives the opportunity to put some other or warmer color on the wall too. I would probably do a soft creamy beige because that is what my living room is and I would want to tie the two together. I've thought about painting my chairs black, but I don't think I will. I don't think it would last in my family and black shows dust more - but I like the look. My accent color is blue, so I do have blue chair cushions and there is some blue in my window treatment.

Use your blue as an accent color. U can pick up a few pieces of antique china at a antique store inexpensively if they have mismatched pieces - I've gotten plates as low as $1.

agree totally with apple pie's advice to go one shade lighter (on the same card) for your dining room. i love yellow but for your dining room less might be good.

and if you do go with wainscot, which i love, you can go for a stronger color up top.

I love your wall color. I would keep it and paint your furniture white.

The dark blue requires crisp clean lines to pull it off. I just did a complete redo on my DR and best advice, don’t rush it. Decide what you love,if anything, in the room then work from there. For me this room seems way over crowded largely due to the large hutch with too many flourishes. If you need a hutch, find a simple, clean lined one. Farm style hutches can be found new or used, then work from there. Do you need the small table that is in the room?

Paint should come after you decide on furniture, not before, unless you are keeping what you have. Again, you can find simple farm tables (on this site and Cabinfield.com where I purchased my new table).might work with your style while simplifying your room.

You're spot on. Not only does the paint colour not please me, but the hutch was a hand-me-down, is not my style, and does indeed overpower the small dining room. Thank you!! My budget is very limited but you've got me thinking...

I see nice DR furniture on local flea market sites (FB has these,) frequently. I’d go for simple rectangular furniture that doesn’t overwhelm. If you can do with a smaller hutch that matches the style you find, I think you will be happier. With neutral paint, you could then find a nice colorful rug for under the table to create the pulled together look. I just started giving away or selling stuff I never used and was able to use a very small china cabinet for my treasures! Good luck and keep us posted .

I painted your room something like a cream, but even this isn't enough to tone down the orange. Consider painting the furniture or sell it on craigslist and get something you actually like.

That's a huge help! Yes, the furniture is almost orange, isn't it?? I love the idea of selling it. Time for a fresh start that is my style. Not my ex-boyfriend's parents' castaways from about 4 years ago.

Oh yes...dump it! Ex boyfriend...parents castaways too much baggage! If you need storage, maybe a low buffet would be better too if you have the room. I am curious how groveraxle did the paint on your photo? Very cool .

Sell the hutch and dining set on Craig's List and use the $$ to find a really pretty table and chairs (2nd hand) that you love and can paint white.
