You should keep them covered - at least draped with a Saran wrap or a piece of plastic, barely moist and under good light. Most of them will take off and do good, small percent will perish. In 2 weeks the ones that made it will be growing fast.

I second what Irina said. :o) In my experience they take within 3 weeks.

With good light and humid environment - they will take off like little rockets. The stronger and the heftier is the baby - the more chances it will work. The weak and the flimsy - probably not worth the space anyway.

Irina, Marina, some are pretty weak. I do not see, however, why do cover them with plastic. Somehow I never seem to have success with that. They seem to die anyways, plastic and all.

Second note, my plants grow on windowsills. Some are now in an east-facing window and the others are in a south-facing window. I do not intend to get light for any plants.

I find that using plastic on windowsills leads to the plant getting "steamed" from the warm daylight. You can root them in a ziploc under a lamp (any lamp). All my bedroom lamps have LED bulbs in them and that'll work too. In the end, a few weeks from natural daylight won't kill them, it'll just keep the temperature in the bag more regulated.

If that excess warmth is not the issue, it might be the mix you're rooting in. Half soil, half perlite is fine for most. But if the soil is pre-fertilized, they might be too sensitive, so you can try damp vermiculite, or another neutral medium.

If we're sure your mix is fine--how is your water? Letting the chlorine etc. gas off overnight really improves plant health. Violets don't like soft water.
