It crisped in partial sun here even before the heat set in. I moved it to almost complete shade and it's doing much better. It also goes by Arctic Ice, which is a better name because there's nothing "Petit" about it. Ludwigs has it listed as growing to head high/above head high and shows photos of an immense free standing shrub. Ludwigs uses phrases like "needs space to develop" and "tremendous growing power." It's also recommended to grow it against a fence, which is what I'm doing. It sprawls and acts like a short climber (but many do here, so take that for what it's worth).

It's definitely not a little rose though. It sprawls and reaches.

Not the best photo, but it’s what it’s giving me to work with currently.

Healthy foliage. Dropping. It’s not quite tall enough for the next level of wire on the fence so it’s flopping. Without wire or supports, mine would be flopping all over the ground. I think it will be a positive aspect of its growth habit once it gets older (for where I have it). It seems to be an arching, reaching, sprawling type of rose.

Thanks Cori Ann for the review! Good to know it's like a climber. Since I have quicksilver and posiden already I'm going to pass for now.. until spring and someone posts ( probably you!! ) a swoonworthy photo and I wish I had it !

Lisa are you bidding on it ? im so excited to hear what you get .

Hey y'all ! I'm bumping this up hoping for more responses. I know there are some new faces here that maybe also have it . Thanks !

I don’t grow it , but I saw it at Huntington Gardens in LA. A very light lavender, reminded me a bit of the old HT Lady X. Seemed quite free blooming, I didn’t get much fragrance out of it, but I just saw it that one time.

I got mine from Palatine 2yrs ago. It's still in a big pot, awaiting a spot in the ground. First yr it got 2blooms. Last yr it never bloomed and didn't grow hardly at all. I'm thinking this is a rose that does not like being in a pot. Sorta like my FRANCIS MEILLAND. Had him in a pot for 3yrs. Did nothing much at all til he got in the ground. Took off like a weed! Now he's a monster. I think that will happen with ARCTIC ICE. The blooms I did get that first yr were very large and lovely pale lavender. They blew pretty fast tho, and had thrips as you can see...

Yes blows/crisps very fast here too, which is why I moved it to complete shade. It’s just OK for me so far. Nothing really too spectacular about it, but it has healthy foliage.

I bought it from Palatine in fall 2016. It grew fast last year to about 6'. It blooms very freely and has very healthy leaves. The blooms were big and had a lovely fragrance. Not that full of petals. Mine gets some afternoon shade and I didn't notice blooms blowing fast or crisping.

I just bought it from Lowes! I will keep this updated on how it does.

@GardeningTeenager I bought one this year too! We shall see how it goes.

I saw it from 20 feet away and my jaw dropped! I knew that one was the one I wanted! I had forgotten to bring cash so I had to wait for my dad to finish so I could get it. I stood by it for 15 minutes waiting for him to finish to make sure it wouldn't get taken by someone else! I looked like a weirdo but I would not have let it out of my sight for the world!!!

    Here it is!

I got both violets pride and le petit prince, this year from Witherspoon, so they are newbies in my garden and still in a pot.. Violet's pride is quite charming and beautiful but LPP is one of those roses that draws the eye, stands out, sublime is the adjective that comes to my mind. They are all getting filtered sunlight, as our temps have gone to the crisp rose stage=90+

I just got Le Petit Prince and Francis Meilland!!! I went to a local-ish greenhouse and went through all of their roses looking for roses that I liked. Every rose (like usual) had black canes to cut off...but I think they'll be alright. :) :)

GardeningTeenager - you were so right to "guard" a rose that you loved!! I had my husband waiting by the cart that I put the roses I was thinking about getting. He was sitting on the ground petting their cat...and I was worried someone would come by and take my roses off the cart. LOL We were the only ones there...but still. LOL

Purilisa - I'm so glad that you like this rose so much!! Mine had no blooms (pretty awful bush)...so it's nice to know that it has such charm!

@rosecanadian Yay, LPP! Mine is going to bloom very soon, I'm so curious to see it in person. And smell it. It is very glossy, super shiny leaves!

Magpie - your LPP looks AWESOME!!! Wahoo!! :) :) Mine is about a month away from what you have there. :) Please remember to let us know what the fragrance is like...and update with more pictures. :) :) Thank you!

I just bought LPP (3 of them!) at Lowes yesterday. However, the blooms are not like what's pictured everywhere. Mine is pink with frilly petals. I bought Moonlight in Paris from Lowes as well recently, and oddly enough, the blooms look so similar. Makes me wonder if they are mislabeled.

    Here's a picture of LPP:

Beryl - GASP!!!! That is incredibly beautiful!!! I want my LPP to look like that!! Mine still hasn't bloomed.

@rosecanadian I am pretty convinced that it is actually Scentuous. Now I ended up with 6 of them due to mislabel and need to return some, but yes, they are gorgeous and smell divine!

Scentuous...I'll try to remember that it's a great rose if I ever find one. :)

Slowly opening, I like the color of the petals and the very dark and shiny leaves... the bud smells nice, I wonder what the scent will be like when it fully opens.

Here's more from today. I cut the first bloom as it started to open, will update later on how the outdoor blooms open and handle the sun and 100° heat we have right now.

Magpie - they look like beautiful butterflies flapping in slow motion!!! And your 2nd to last picture really shows a luscious deeper violet color!! Love bouquet with the canterbury bells (I think that's what they are.) :)

    last modified: 5 years ago

Yes, that's what they are 😊 I've found mine to be very floppy and susceptible to broken or bent stalks due to water weight and wind damage. So anyways the stalk in the vase was all wonky and that's why I cut it and it's all at a weird angle hahah.

Edit for clarification, I was talking about the Can't. Bells and not the rose 🤪

    Magpie - oh dear. :) :)

Magpie, iI grew Canterbury Bells for a number of years, both from seed and plants. I love yours and they are a favorite flower of mine. Unfortunately, it's just too hot and dry here for them to prosper well. Their other drawback is they are biennial, so they are equivalent to an annual that you have to wait a year to see bloom (if you start from seed). If you grow from a plant with buds or blooms--that's it, just one season. Still their unique beauty is worth it if you have a decent climate for them. It sounds like you have some weather challenges for the Bells. Diane

Diane - I had no idea that Canterbury Bells are so fussy. Perennials are so much nicer...one and done!

    last modified: 5 years ago

@rosecanadian I'm starting to appreciate the perennials in my garden more and more as time goes on. I keep adding a few each year.

Le Petit Prince continuing to open. The color is just lovely, especially in combination with the dark, shiny leaves. This morning I'm definitely detecting that "baby powder" scent that I've seen people mention, but it's almost a smoother scent, if that could ever make sense... more pleasant than actual baby powder. So far I have to put my nose right up to the flower to smell it.

    And fully opened up now...

Oooh!!! I love that dark central color!!!! Reminds me of the colors that Diane's roses get!!! Your first picture is exceptional!!! :) :)

    last modified: 5 years ago

Thank you 😊 It's still too early to really say anything else about the rose other than the leaves are lovely, and the color and quality of the petals makes them seem as if they're porcelain. It's been about 100°F each day and it's in almost all day sun, a couple of hours of dappled shade in there, and the petals are fine SO FAR 🙃

Oh, and my cut one wilted in the vase the very next day so that was a bummer.

Well, so it's not (so far) a good cut flower...but it sounds like it's fabulous with heat!

    Mine is blooming too!

What a wonderful color!!!! I wish mine would hurry up and get a bud or too. :)

The fragrance is very nice IMO. Like a powdery, slightly lemony fragrance. Not a sweet fragrance but still I find it very nice. I always sniff it when I walk by. The petals have some substance to them, they're not paper thin. @rosecanadian I sure hope you enjoy yours.

    @GardeningTeenager yay blooms! Very pretty.

It is less lemony than blue moon, i relate it more to a beach rose fragrance. Thank you so much for the complements @rosecanadian and @Mischievous Magpie (CO 5b), but in person these blooms are much more lavender. Even with a truly lavender rose like blue moon, my IPhone XR camera cannot capture the purple. All it catches are the pink tones and none of the purple. Makes me sooooooooo angry, i've been trying to show off my roses to people and I'm like, "oh look at my purple rose!!!" and then people I show it to think I am crazy because the picture I show them shows it as pink.

@rosecanadian mine is a prolific bloomer in the sun, give it a week or two and it will be loaded with blooms.

Magpie - lemony is a fragrance that's missing from my roses! So that's exciting!

GT - I'm not sure what a beach rose fragrance is. :) :) Do you mean Rugosa rose fragrance? Which I don't know either LOL LOL Good to know that it's even more purple than the pictures you show. Excellent! :) I sure hope mine is a prolific bloomer too :) :)

Magpie and GT thanks for the good wishes for me LPP! :)

Beach rose is Rosa Rugosa, sorry about that, where I live we call them beach roses because they grow on the beaches.

@rosecanadian the lemon is a subtle note i pick up on during some sniffs, but it's not a strong leading fragrance. Don't want to get your hopes up lol. But either way it smells good so I think you're going to enjoy it. Plus the color is sooo pretty 😍

    Magpie - excellent!!!

    GT - :)

    J - oh, now that's beautiful!!!!! Happy sigh. :)
