I would be very nervous about this, only because if they hire a sketchy contractor now your home's structural integrity is compromised.

I would make sure they have all the proper permits and get them to agree that if anything goes wrong as a result of their work they will be responsible, not you. As for what disruptions you can expect, that depends on what exactly they're doing and what support is already there.

I would not do this. Are you in a condo? Because the condo association would have to sign off on this as well.

Chiflipper is right. When we added onto our house we had to add supports through the apartment below- the advantage was we owned the apartment too. In our case the apartment was unusable for a couple weeks- demo, new framing inserted, minor electrical to allow for additional framing, then drywall and paint. You would need to be compensated.
