I'd go for a taller fireplace surround with a bigger mantel. Or try painting the entire pop out a soft black.

I am the last person to suggest someone paint a wood fireplace, but this is such a mixed mess of material. Before I would paint, if possible remove the medallion and the tile below the mantel. Replace the tile with a piece of wood to fit in the space and paint.

This all depends on the look and motif you are wanting.....but, for me. I would rip out the all the filigree and medallion above the fireplace. Add a fireplace ledge the height of the bottom of the fireplace. Rock around the fireplace to the ceiling with whatever your favorite stone may be, or what may match your other elements in the house (e.g. brick), and then add built in book shelves on both sides of the fireplace in white to match the trim. I happen to like books and places to show art and that is what we did adjacent to our fireplace.

I think this is one case where it makes sense to demo what's here and start again.

instead of that black mantel, Jodi, a nice reclaimed wood piece would work much better w/your flooring, the art, and the sofa.

you could find a solid piece for $25 bucks or so. super easy and would really make a diff.

if you're doing that, think about replacing those white shelves w/this wood too.
