Instead of removing the maple tree why not consider pruning it each year to keep it from outgrowing its spot? if it were me that's what I would do, it's too beautiful a tree to give away :). That's what my neighbors do and their Japanese maples still look great each year.

the tree is located in Fairfax, Va. I'm looking to sell it for a fair price to help pay for some medical expenses for Mom. I'm not interested in giving it away for free. I don't even know how much it's worth, thought I'd post it on here to get a feel if it's worth dealing with the headache to sell it? or if chances are slim, might as well keep it and I'll figure something else out for money.

no. i don't know what it's called but the previous owner told me it's when a young maple tree is grown onto a stump or something similar to that.

The value of your maple at a nursery would be well over $300 I think. However finding a buyer on craigslist or ebay will be tricky.

If you lived in my neighborhood and I could use a friend's tractor and had a place to put it and a half day to move it I might buy it from you. But it wouldn't be for enough money for you to break even. By the time you put up with the mess and hire someone to bring in topsoil to fill the hole left behind and buy something to replace it you wouldn't be happy with the deal. If a company with a tree spade wanted it you might do better. Gradually prune it back. It's a beautiful tree.
