My "Black Pearl"

Probably the one plant that has given me the most constant grief ever since I got it was Black Pearl. Over the last year, I have divided it at least three times, destroyed hundreds of suckers and mini-crowns and dang near threw the whole plant away half a dozen times. This is the last iteration of my efforts. I propagated a leaf from it and this is the plant that grew from it. It appears to be devoid of many of the wacky issues its mother had. You be the judge but I think it was ALMOST worth the effort.

I took a couple other pics of plants on that rack. Just in case you wanted something new to look at.

Nice plants, Jeff.

I tried to grow the sport of this plant (EK Grey Ocean) a couple times ... and had similar issues to the ones you mention.

I ultimately gave up. I've seen it grown really well though.

What are the other two plants you show ?

The bottom one is "K's Cherry Chip Frosting". The middle pic is "Buckeye Nostalgia" with a small "Jolly Orchid" tucked in behind it.

Gorgeous! I didn't know that EK Grey Ocean was a sport of Black Pearl. I have a baby 'Black Pearl sport' that I have been babying as well as a couple of babies from a leaf that I put down when I tossed my EK Grey Ocean. Great to know.

Thanks for all the kind words. I enjoy looking at nicely grown plants and their flowers. Many that I have seen here for the first time are now on MY wish list!

Very rich color on BP. Perhaps if you talk to it like Capt. Jack Sparrow it will perform better for you. :-D

I TRIED to grow 'Black Pearl', I bought a young plug of it, and it was dead in about a month. I love that bloom! That is a problem I want to have! To many blooms, and to many plants of a variety with a huge great bloom.

I have crowded crowns on two violets, and just posted about it. But my Black Pearl is gone:(. All that from a leaf? I wish! Very nice!
