It would help a lot if you take the straps off the guitars.

The two guitars aren't enough to fill all that space above the couch. I think they should be positioned vertically, to one side, without straps. Adding some interesting art (black and white would be fab) to the other side to create a kind of gallery wall. Even just one or two other pieces. Will be a very interesting wall!

I’d try hanging on the diagonal first. It takes approximately the same space but the line movement would echo one another instead of clash and leave the “dead” space of the guitar necks in the middle. Other options would be creating a shadow box for each guitar or a backdrop to tie the two together and act as a canvas.

Your gut is telling you all you need to know: the guitars make the music, art is for the walls. :)

I like the horizontal placement of the guitars - it's different.
I would remove the straps, unless they have strong sentimental value. If they do, I'd suggest hanging the straps on a decorative hook above each guitar.
To truly showcase these, I would use a nice size decorative molding to create a frame around them and then install a couple of small, recessed lights above to really make them shine! (Might need to relocate that bright lamp in the corner too or use a softer light bulb).

I would not only be concerned with neck issues hanging horizontally long term, but also since they are instruments still in use, need to be in a humidity controlled environment-- their cases.

I think they look good horizontal. Take the straps off, as others have said, but place them a little further apart, closer to the sides of the couch.
