DR accessory

Here's a pic of my DR from quite awhile ago.

The area in question is the ivies in the planters on both sides of the DR window. The ivies are not doing well, the little tables the pots are sitting on were really cheap and the plant containers even cheaper, so I need a replacement.

I went to a salvage yard and saw something similar to these, probably about 5' high in aged brass.

The advantages are that the wall paper is Wm Morris which has a theme of nature, outside the window is a pond so the cranes would be appropriate, I wouldn't need to water them and they won't die, and antique brass is the color of the hardware used throughout the house.

What say ye?

FYI .. cranes like the ones pictured were once seen as poolside decor in many Florida homes. I always liked them but they would not be considered to be very special or unusual here.

Wow! It's unanimous. That never happens! I guess I better high-tail it to the salvage yard!

I think they're fun. But then I'd move the horse head on the pedestal elsewhere. (Is that what it is? A little blurry on my iPad.)

Yes, Sueb, it is a horse's head on a pedestal.

I went to the salvage yard today to get them but they were closed on mondays :(

    Will have to go tomorrow...

Please take pics when they're in place...I would love to see them together rather than one on each side.

I hope they're still there - the cranes would be a little unexpected in a dining room - so go for it.

Got 'em. They are so kitsch! I just placed them. They need some TLC and we need to put felt on the bases so they don't scratch the floor. But they make me smile to look at them, and that's what counts. Love how the curved necks mimic the curves in the chandy.

But I think sueb is right...the horse head looks diminutive now. Only problem is where to put it...not a lot of wall space or nooks in this house...

They look just awful. I'll take them off your hands for you.... ;)

Your stuff should make you smile! If it doesn't, then it has no room in your house.

(Still would like to see them together, but they're Fabulous, capital F)

Omigosh, the cranes are some kind of wonderful at that scale. What a gorgeous room with that ceiling, beautiful window and millwork, yum yum.

I think they're fabulous and the horse's head still looks great where it is. I just realized that the room looks much more elegant without the tablecloth. However, the room is now also rather monochromatic. Instead of the art you have now over the bench, how about a fabulous and colorful painting with greens and blues in it, with plants and birds to make the room look alive and vibrant, and maybe a little bit whimsical, to go with your cranes?

No drapes, but I'd turn them either toward each other or away from each other. Meaning both not in the same direction. They fit the space perfectly!

    Annie Deighnaugh thanked tinam61

We played quite a bit with placement and direction. One has her head over her body so we can either have the heads facing each other or the feet, but not both. We also played with them on an angle, and we liked this position best.

The cranes are fab. I like how their bodies face each other. I don't think drapes are an asset. The cranes frame the lovely view and are graceful with the curve of the window. The cranes work beautifully with the colors in the dining room and you are right they complement the chandelier. The horse head looks just fine when you see it from the direction taken in the last photo. Enjoy them for a long time.

I love the cranes and how they look in silhouette in the window. No draperies needed. What a great find!

I was disappointed to get here too late, because my opinion is they do not work. The greenery stands out, but the brass will not.

THEN, i saw the photo. Duh, it's all about the scale (most of us on GW read too fast, don't we?) It says 5' high but it did not register.

Then I see the photo. They are fabulous! I love them. I covet them. No WT; they need to shine.

PS they are outshining your horse head; can that come to one of the near corners of the room?

    Annie Deighnaugh thanked mtnrdredux_gw
  • 9 years ago

They look fabulous I love their shape and size. Too bad the horse's head couldn't be between the two pictures up on the bench for height. The pictures would frame the horse's head and the height would give it more presence.

Thanks, everyone. I've never seen so much unanimity here! Most appreciate everyone's comments!

    rita, love your comment "aviary"!

mtnrd, I was hoping you would comment as I value your opinion. But in this case, I'm glad you were late to the party! ;) I shy away from putting the horse head on the inside corners of the DR as it's right near the columns and it might be too many columns in one space.

yeonassky, thanks for your suggestion. There are actually 3 panels on that side wall. I could move the bench and put the pedestal in front of the center one to see how it looks. The dark wallpaper would frame the light pedestal and horsehead nicely. (The bench is a sentimental piece as my Dad made it.)

I understand about the silhouette, but the reason I keep thinking drapes is, without the plants, there is no softness in the room...everything is very hard surfaced. And to me, the cranes look very victorian and of course they used a lot of draperies. I would make them skim the window, not cover it, and I wouldn't cover the arch at all but start them at the mullion. I could move the cranes a little closer so they would skim the drape edge and still be silhouetted against the light...well I need to think on it some more. I do have the fabric I bought for the window before the house was built. And I'm keeping in mind that so many here, unlike me, are anti window treatments in general.

Maybe I'm sensing what ingrid suggests about monochromatic...though it's not really. The colors in there are beige/gold walls with plum shades in the carpet and wall panels and the ceiling is pale blue. (I eventually want to do clouds on the ceiling and I started practicing, but I'm stymied...I'm afraid my skills aren't good enough to get what I envision, but I'm also afraid an artist won't get my vision of what I want and won't be able to do it for me either. I need to keep repeating Christopher Lowell's mantra: where there's fear, there's no creativity!) But I think the greenery and softness of the plants did add something that's now missing.

    Here is the wallpaper.

Ingrid, one reason I think the table looks better is it's a new one. The old one was smaller and not the right scale for the room.

I also have some spaths-- peace lily -- in the guest room that are quite large. I could maybe split them and use them around the base of the cranes for some greenery and softness. Also very victorian.

But I keep thinking Boston ferns...

I love Boston ferns on pedestals. I had one in my BR in highschool. I think they have such an old world grandeur.

    That wall paper is yummy

    Annie Deighnaugh thanked mtnrdredux_gw
  • 9 years ago

I love boston ferns also, but don't have the best of luck with them indoors. Also, I love drapes, but think the cranes are the star of the window area. I wish there were a way you could tack fabric up and let us see how it looks.

Update: DH did a great job of making wood bases for the cranes and now they won't scratch the floor. And I had a couple of spaths downstairs which I moved up to put by the cranes and like it much better. Still debating on the drapes...

I think it is perfect without drapes. Formal & simplicity at the same time!

    Annie Deighnaugh thanked eandhl2

I agree!! Perfect just the way it is now. I can see what your saying about drapes, but if you do drapes at 1.5 W-aren't they going to cover the window some?

    Annie Deighnaugh thanked Peppapoodle

I agree with you Annie, I think drapes would add a soft touch that would complete the room (love the cranes, by the way, also a fan of drapes), what does the fabric you have look like?

    Annie Deighnaugh thanked ghostlyvision

    last modified: 8 years ago

I have two fabrics I purchased for the room...long before there were even windows! One is a solid beige-gold dupioni silk similar to the wall color and the other is a similar beige-gold background and subtle 2" purple flowers scattered on it...I'd have to dig them out of my stash to post pics. I would do narrow panels on each side of the window so it just skims the edge, not covers it. Maybe something like the one below...maybe in the solid gold or the drape in the gold and the "valance" part in the print... I'd have the rod at the height of the mullion, leaving the arch clear.

I dug up the fabric and tried to mock it up. DH and I really like it. Unfortunately, it's very difficult to get a good color rendition from either of my cameras. It comes out way too gold. But here goes:

The sheen in the silk matches the wall color. Here's a close up of the fabric that's a little truer to the actual colors in the room, though here the print looks more bold in the pic than it does in RL...and in RL the background in the print matches the dupioni silk really well...in the pic it looks more green. The colors in the flowers mimic the wm morris paper quite well.

I was firmly in the no drapery camp...but I can totally see the appeal of a lush, full, decadent silk, here...

(not so much the flowers, though--I like the plain part).

I do love the silhouette of those gorgeous cranes in front of the windows...whatever you do, don't lose the impact of that. It looks like you can scootch them a little closer to the center if you use the drapes, though.

    Annie Deighnaugh thanked User

Both of the fabrics are just lovely, and I like that 'bundled valance' (can't be the right term for it but it sounded good when it came to mind lol), that would display just enough of the floral fabric without it being too much. Can't wait to see the finished pics of this, the drapes will be stunning and a perfect frame for the cranes.
