Go bold. Maybe a monochromatic gray on gray scheme.

Thanks, I actually was thinking about someday redoing the tile, but perhaps a wooden front would be easier. Do you know if putting wood on the front of a fireplace is safe?

You can definitely use wood as long as you stay 12" away from the firebox all the way around. Are you asking about grasscloth for the walls?

Try getting a different rug, it doesn't seem to be helping the situation. You can make lots of neutrals work for you, with a pop of color here and there. Below is one of our designs. Notice the painting in the corner?

Does the dark crown molding seem to pull the ceiling down? Maybe paint it the same color as the trim. Agree, fireplace tile color is at odds with the wall paint.
