Getting finished lawn level right

We are starting to backfill against a new retaining wall that is forming a flat area that will become a lawn. We are wondering how many inches below our desired finished elevation should we stop the backfill so that once we add topsoil, irrigation, and sod we will end up at the desired finished elevation? Thanks very much for your advice!

Are you filling up against any buildings? Your desired elevation is 4 inches below the sill of any buildings to prevent water infiltration. Then out away from the buildings the soil level should drop 6 inches in 10 feet. That's your desired surface. Then it's up to you to decide inches of topsoil versus inches of backfill.
