Bartzella is an Itoh peony. It is not an herbaceous peony.

Thank you, Jean. Just to reiterate, the eyes of this plant appear to be located higher than typical Itoh peonies (at least based on images that I find online). Should all these eyes be below soil? Wouldn't that be too deep?

Plant tags fade......badly :-) I would never rely on a plant tag to be an accurate depiction of the plant it was attached to! This could very well be Itoh Bartzella, as it does appear to be an intersectional peony. And don't worry about the eyes or buds - plant so that only .5 - 1.5 inches of soil cover the roots.

I have to disagree but if the OP plants as gardengal suggests they will be able to tell next year.

If it is my plant, i would plant as follows: bury everything under the red line.

It maybe a tree peony or an itoh. You can only tell when the peony grows and blooms. I do get eyes on the stems above the soil on my Bartzella.

Wondering I too get buds on the stems but the stems always seem a little crooked were the buds are rather than straight. Has anyone noticed a difference between straight or slightly crooked where the bud is?

I don't see any crookedness on my Bartzella where the buds are. Here are some pics of my Bartzella.

Wait to take pictures when fully dormant like in January after the sap have moved down the stems. The bottom picture on the right side shows a bud indenting the stem which is what causes the crookedness in the stems. That is vs the bud sticking straight out from the stem in tp's. Just have to wait and see.

Oh, I see what you mean! Because my zone is cold enough to kill most buds above the ground, I normally prune it down to the ground. I will leave these stems until spring to see what happens. Now that you point this out, let me take a look at some of my TP and compare the buds.

Itoh peonies have buds both above and below ground level. If weather is not harsh, the above ground buds will develop and can have flowers as tree peonies. If the weather is too cold, only buds below ground level will survive , as herbaceous peonies.
