Raised garden beds are also nice. Easy to build.

If you need the fence to keep critters out, a white picket fence, then surround the fence with annuals/flowers on the outside would beautify the area.

I agree with Harding - raised garden beds are the way to go... You don't break your back bending down as you till the earth, easy to spot the ripe fruits, the flowering vegetables make a pretty feature and you can even sit on the edge with a cuppa after a hard days planting!

we do exactly what Sanjo described each spring in our vege garden to get our garden weed free and ready for planting. however, i have several long garden beds, surrounded by grass, that are not raised and fighting to control the weeds is quite litterally an all summer afair. it is my understanding that the weeding chore diminishes quite a bit with raised beds.
