I can't figure out the pieces. Do you have pics of the empty spot and of the extra cabinet?

I wont have any till later i can take some when i get home. It will be a window a double door 36x36 cabinet then nothing. on the bottom will be the sink under the window and cabinets that go out farther than the top cabinets. Where the window is there was going to be a cabinet. but im thinking if i turn it sideways and make it tall and not long i can put it next to the 36x36 cabinet and then the top and bottom will end same length. Its hard to explain but i can get pics! Thank you

With the caveat that this is very difficult to envision without pictures or more information, I'm with your husband on this one...the upper cabinet run doesn't have to match the bottom run. I'm not really understanding your DIY project but I can't imagine it will look better than a few open shelves or a nice piece of art/a clock/whatever, assuming your main concern was the "look" and not lack of storage. you could also adjust the placement of the upper run of cabinets to give more space around the windows (maybe leaving space for curtains? Depending on your look) to minimize that gap at the end.

to answer your question, you'd have to take a close look at the box construction in order to assess whether you can hang it sideways. It will no longer have a recess for undercabinet or overcabinetlighting if you were planning on using that. If you're considering buying a new door for it anyways why not just buy a new cabinet? Are they wood cabinets? Because they'll have holes pre drilled for hardware you'd have to deal with.

under the window is my sink. then to the right will be a 36in wide cabinet. It doesnt go all the way over so there will be nothing on the wall above that last cabinet. I feel like there should be another cabinet so it all ends the same. Does this help? sorry this is my first time on here asking advise and our first time doing a big project :)

I would want cabinets that start to the right of the window (by a couple inches, to match the other side) and cover the remaining cabinets below. If you have a 36" cabinet, get another 12 or 15 inch wall cabinet that will fill the remaining width -- I agree that you ideally want them to all end up in the same place. I don't understand your description of a wide but short cabinet, but anyway, agree that you want the math on bottom and top to come out the same unless you're planning on a bunch of open shelves instead.

i have an extra cabinet that was going to go where the window is now. its 36 in in width but only 15 in tall... if i put it verticle it will be 36 in tall and will match the other cabinets and would fill that gap at the end
