It's So Hot It Is Ridiculous

Currently at our Mesonet station, the high temperature (so far) today is 91 degrees. This is a new record for any date in November here. The forecast high was 88. At our house, so far, the high is 'only' 88 and the forecast high was 88.

The cats, dogs and chickens are sulking. They were liking the cooler days. The plants would be sulking too, but most of them froze last week. The trees probably love it and now think they can stay green longer and longer and don't have to bother letting them leaves turn lovely autumn colors.

Our November forecast is for hotter and drier weather than usual, so we're right on track for that here. I believe our usual high in November tends to run around 68-70 degrees.

The biggest issue in my mind is that there's tons of leaves on the ground---mostly in various shades of brown, and this can make it hard for people, dogs, cats, chickens and one big fat turkey to spot the snakes before stepping on them.

The heat also is driving our fire danger higher than usual. There's a Red Flag Fire Warning well to our SW in TX and ongoing grass fires south and southwest of us. If we can make it through today without fires, danger should be lower tomorrow but then higher again over the weekend.

When the cold finally arrived, we were so relieved and hoped it was here to stay. It wasn't.

We hit 93 degrees officially, which is, by several degrees, the highest temperature ever recorded in our county in November. The bees, wasps and yellow jackets were out swarming, but not as much as the lady bugs. Our local TV met said every city in the Texoma region, except Paris, TX, set a new record high today. He also said Dallas-Fort Worth hit 94 degrees, a record for them and the first time they've ever recorded an official high of or above 90 in the month of November. I can't help thinking it isn't good that we are setting more and more record highs every year. Where are the record lows? They aren't happening where we live.

So far my gut feeling that winter will be warm and dry hasn't changed. I was hoping for good autumn rain because winter is our driest season, but the autumn rain isn't happening here either.

We need almost a foot of rain between now and the end of the year just to get our rainfall up to average. I don't think it will happen.

It did get hot there! We didn't get so hot. Our day was pleasant. It's going to be cooler tomorrow and then hotter for the weekend. We are dry too. I need to water the flowers in the front flowerbed, but honestly haven't even had time to look at it. I was able to do garden work on Sunday night, but that is all.

The heat was on the verge of being unpleasant, and I did turn on the air conditioner. The strange thing was how early it got so hot---by around noon we already were around 85 degrees. That might be sort of normal for late Aug or early Sept but is off the charts for November. A FB post from the OK Mesonet a little while ago said the 93 degrees recorded today at Burneyville was the seventh highest temperature ever recorded anywhere in OK in November. Woo hoo----we aren't number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6! At least there's that.

Due to the heat and the snakes, I'll hibernate indoors as much as possible until we cool off substantially again. I knew it was too good to be true that the heat might be over. You'd think a night of low temperatures below freezing for 8 hours would ensure the snakes are down for the fall, but it doesn't. I think for them, it all is about the soil temperature, and this kind of heat will really warm up the soil again. I really had to watch my feet while closing up the chicken coop tonight because there were so many leaves on the ground near it. I wish I had raked up those leaves before we got hot again. Of course, more leaves fall daily so had I raked on a cold morning last week, there'd still be a lot more new leaves down.

I noticed in the dog yard today that tons of green leaves are falling. Really? Why aren't they turning brown before they fall? The green leaves falling just seems weird to me. I always thought the formation of the abscission layer happened sort of in conjunction with the color change of the leaves. Maybe it doesn't.

It was 75 here. No record I don't think but incredibly warm for November. Usually we should be in the 50's-60's by now. What's odd about this autumn is that it'll be 40 degrees one day and 80 degrees the next (In NOVEMBER). My Farmers' Almanac said that would be the normal for our region most the winter. According to them it might be incredible warm one day and cold and snowy the next day this winter. The weather is drunk I'm afraid.
