Living Area Help for a Tiny Room

Hi. I’m helping my sister with their living area. They just finished blowing out a few walls and closet to gain a bit more space in this room. Hardwood floors are new. We found a rug that both her hubby and my sister liked—beautiful hand woven rug. We’ve had several home various sizes and this one fit their space well as the wall to the right behind the console ends just past the end of this rug. The rug is 6’3 by 9’2ish. Dark brown couches stay for at least 3 years till they finish upstairs then tackle basement. My question is what would you recommend for pillows and art and anything else. Maybe plant in right corner? Thanks for your suggestions.

Your sister and hubby are doing a great job on the room so far. The floors are beautiful and timeless. This is only my opinion, but I think leather furniture needs something more substantial than cotton pillows. I think a woven Ikat or kilim pillow is a nice option. With the type of windows they have, I think I would do blackout panels on a traverse rod so they're easy to close at night in a color that's close to the wall color. Are there any particular colors in the rug they prefer to work with?

I think artwork similar to existing one would work on long wall behind the sofa or very large mirror. As for lighting I think two identical lamps always look better than one specially if you have this type of setting, so one more side table and new lamps. For the coffee table I would suggest Noguchi table always fashionable.

Coffee table ideas , but in my opinion glass top would look better because furniture is quite bulky and oriental rug needs to be seen.

Pillows to match the new above suggested lamps & throw. Tuck rug under front legs.

As far as the cushions go you have to match it to either artwork, lamps or rug . So it would be better to coordinate two of those and the third one can be an accent colour .

Take down the vertical blinds and out up some curtains

Glass coffee table is a great idea thank you. And yes those blinds are coming down. My sister hates those. There is a lot to do still. A few more pics. They need to get a railing up on the stairs to the lower level etc. what do you suggest for the window. Different blinds and then panels on the ends or drapes that be closed and opened. They need to close these at night for privacy. Need more art etc. But this is looks sooo much better and larger than before and horrible old yucky carpet.

For the window you can have traditional sheer curtains with block out drapes or modern screen blinds plus block out roller blinds or Roman blinds either way I would go for light neutral colour so it will match other furniture in the future, and make sure they are hang from high up under the ceiling to give the room feeling of more height.

At the end of the room , are those stairs going down? Shouldn’t there be some balustrade??

The rug is actually a little small. Pick up it’s lighter colours for the cushions.

You've done great so far! First, you need to get the furniture set, so that it works and look good. Here is what I recommend:

-move the tv, so that it is centered on the window. (appears not to be)

-remove the art above the end table.

-move the sofa that is along the long wall, toward the window sofa, so that their arms almost touch. Yes, there will be some space behind the sofa and that is okay. (sofa does not have to be centered on the wall).

-eliminate the front hall table and instead, have end tables on either side of the window sofa. (alternately, you can keep the hall table and add a C table to that end of the sofa.

-blinds and stationary drapes hung high will be the most economical and efficient way to handle the window treatments.

When you add draperies, consider a color print to add interest to the space.

Yes correct those are stairs and that is the list of things they need to do. They just finished the floors and are looking at options for the stairs.
Hi CDR. Thanks for those suggestions they make sense. I was thinking that once the railing was in that table by the entry which is narrow could go along that.

Yes, I was thinking the same about the table. You could also consider eliminating the table.

I also encourage you to consider this arrangement. This creates a front hall, where there is none. It also gets the furniture away from the window, eliminates the reflection on the tv, and creates a cozier space for the living area.

Simple oak staircase rail with metal type spindles. Your windows are so pretty. I would go with cell shades for now as the raise up all the way for open window but give great privacy at night and the cost is reasonable: a cell for each window on sides then one in middle cal be economical. Do stairs and shades first then decide what to do next. Safety and privacy make each day better? Just a suggestion.

I will have her try that layout. They have 2 couches which really are too big and I think would close that off. However when they can get new furniture maybe a couch and 2 chairs? The chairs could go with their backs to the entry instead of a couch and allow easier entry into the space yet make it more defined. I agree that railing should be next I agree on that. It’s dangerous. Good thing they don’t sleep walk.

Yes, that is certainly an option. However, they may want the sofa facing the tv, but that can be achieved also. How much seating do they need?

What I am thinking is they could sell one of the sofas now. Perhaps they have a couple of chairs in another room that they could use or buy a couple of inexpensive chairs?

Katinparadise really like a few of those pillows. Where are they from? I can email the link to my sister. Tho she will just tell me to choose. Lol. But I think she will a few of those too.

Some are from Pottery Barn and some are from Etsy. I googled red Ikat pillow and red kilim pillow and went through the images to look for something that had colors similar to your sister's rug.
