It's starting to get worse and I'm still not sure of why this is happening. Any suggestions would be great! I have another spider plant that I've had for a long time that is healthy and happy with my watering habits and the light it gets. Thanks in advance for any help!

Is there a hole in bottom of pot? What kind of mix is under the gravel pls?

There is a hole in the bottom of the pot and it does drain properly. I used Miracle Gro moisture control potting soil, with maybe 10% added perlite to it because I noticed this soil (compared to others I've used) doesn't drain as well.

I use 50/50 MG potting soil and perlite. I never use gravel on the tops of any of my plant's, I believe it restricts air flow, if I were you the first thing I'd do is remove the gravel, poke some holes in the soil and add perlite, don't re-pot until spring.

This happened to a spider of mine, and it was a result of overwatering. It would wilt and drop leaves if I watered it once a week. I agree that these plants like a good dry spell, so let it go for a couple weeks.

I also have a spider plant that has been turning brown in the middle. I check with a wooden dowel before watering. I just watered it 2 days ago and I swear I could water it again bc the soil is bone dry and my wooden dowel was clean ( I just checked it) but I'm not going to water it. My questions is could my plant be outgrown from its pot and causing this?

All you can see are roots - I would think plant would be better in bigger pot. Whatever soil is left seems to be all peat (or mostly peat). If it is hard, it could be hydrophobic and it would repel water. So regardless how often you water, it all just 'slides' around and drains out immediately.

Adding just a little perlite doesn't help - using 50/50 mix, as already suggested, is much better. Or use other fast draining mixes (like 5.1.1 or 1.1.1). It may be good idea to sift or at least rinse perlite to get rid of dust and smallest particles.

I use top-dressing of gravel on just about all potted plants without any negatives. I have many succulents and also other tropicals, and even quite a few perennials in containers. They are all outdoors during warm weather, and tender plants spend winter indoors. I started using gravel top-dressing to stop or at least slow down squirrels from digging :) and it helped a lot. Gravel drains well, and I never have problem with air flow. I have seen posts by few ppl regarding same, and maybe it doesn't work for some locations (perhaps humid climate? ) but in my years of keeping potted plants gravel top-dressing never caused problems. As long as the potting medium is well draining, plants are doing very well. If drainage is poor there will be problems top-dressing or not.

I am also having a problem. I never have had a problem with spider plants and all of the sudden this one is on its last leg. Any suggestions. I have already cut back watering.

Please help with my spider plant. I tried everything. Initially I kept it moist and indoor. The tips started drying out. So now I kept it out and minimised watering once a week. Totally clueless.

Please help me to save my spider plant.

My big spider has recently started to brown from the base/center leaves. I have just taken it out of the pot to check the condition of the roots and they are healthy. But as suggested here, the roots were pretty tightly packed. So for me its a removal of as much dead material as possible and a repot. Lets see what happens
