Living room Makeover

The before of this living room is just a plain, bland, old looking room lacking everything except a good place to start a huge DIY project.

Thank you so much for your kind comments!
We got the rug from Overstock.com
The accent wall is Roosevelt Taupe 1539 form Benjamin Moore and the other color is Crisp Khaki 234.
The fireplace was the biggest challenge : we removed the bricks that where on the hearth length to bring the floors and the fireplace area to the same level, then we tiled the whole thing; the real challenge begun when it came to get the mantel done. No mantel on the market was fit for the facing width of our fireplace . We contacted a lot of mantel builders for a custom mantel but all of them gave us only options for a much higher one and much, much deeper in terms of facing thickness and it would have been at least disproportional with the size of the room. They all were trying to correct an issue that we encountered : our fireplace is not flush to the wall and the facing thickness was not equal on both sides - the left one was shorter than the right one. So we ended up building it ourselves from scratch.

We only tiled the fireplace. The floor is mirror finish laminate flooring 12.3 mm
  • 13 years ago
It was a great choice! What does 12.3 mean?

12.3 mm thickness . I noticed that I forgot typing the "mm" but you were faster :)
    12.3 mm thick (1/2 inch)

Thanks. Beyond, what brand did you use and was it easy to install? Am thinking about doing laminate in my basement.
I can't remember it's name right now, but I'll get back to you on this one. It's double click system , no glue, very easy to install

    Great! Thanks.

You did a great job. The only thing I would correct is the height of the 3 pictures above the sofa. Art should be hung at eye level. A little lower when behind a sofa. Lower them at least 4 inches. You'll see what I mean.

    Beautiful, restful room.

    Absolutely awesome job!

They may be taller than you think. Rules are made to be broken, especially in one's home decor.

Good Job, love the rug and the furniture placement.
Nice room but pics are too high.
Well, the paintings are tall, they are at eye level and we hang them considering also the height of the mantel and the starburst above it.
I looked closely at the picture now and, yes, they seem a bit too high but I guess this may be due to the picture's perspective.

your colours and furniture choices are lovely. i would suggest re positioning the furniture away from the walls. put the couch in front of the fire and have a sofa table behind. congratulations on all your hard work
