Not a weed. Something in the mallow family, probably either a hollyhock or malva sylvestris (aka as French hollyhock). Mine stay green most of the winter. Even if they freeze during a very cold night, they will put out new growth again within a few weeks.

Well cool!! I think I planted a malva sylvestris, but when? Maybe last year? Didn't think it survived. Maybe I did my lazy gardener toss some seeds out and see what happens thing.

Yay. I'm pretty sure it is malva sylvestris. You'll be able to tell which one when it blooms. I have the original 'Zebrina' that I've grown about 15 years now, and then there is another one that doesn't reseed as well but I still get occasional volunteers from it. It is called 'Mystic Merlic'.

Me too--that's what I thought of. This is exceptionally healthy looking!

Considering I didn't know it was there and it was probably buried under comfrey for the summer, it is real healthy. I was sure it was a horrible weed.

Well, YES. What did you think. This looks a lot like malva, but I sure could be wrong. I know it, but I don't know everything that LOOKS like it! Tell, tell. I am usually the last to weigh in unless I have an intimate knowledge of it. Like Husker Red Penstemon, for example. LOL

LOL, Rebecca, wish we could grow that weed. Truthfully, I would like to grow hemp, because the seeds are so high in protein.
