Hi all! I'm new to the forums (well, Ive been lurking for years, mostly in trees in containers sections) and to the cultivation of figs. I threw some seeds from a fig I ate into a pot a few years ago and they grew into nice little trees, but that hardly counts. Ficus carica is more or less a weed here. I have always taken an experimental, hope-for-the-best approach to propagation.

Anyway, Im really excited about getting into germinating trees, especially figs more purposefully, so I hope someone will give me some pointers in my first endeavor.

I pre-ordered 100 Ficus sycomorus seeds from what I believe to be a relatively reputable seller, to make sure they would be as fresh as possible. Yesterday they shipped. Problem is, I havent managed to find much information on the propagation of this species, just some general info for Ficus germination. Does anyone know more about this species in particular or is it pretty standard? Do they have decent germination rates, if pollinated by wasp in their natural range?

I am planning on using a mixture of cocopeat and perlite, screened of course, in community pots. Is this an appropriate seed starting mix?

I dont have an actual greenhouse, but can cover them to keep humidity up, if that is advisable. Unfortunately, we also have mold problems over here, so is it a good idea to sterilise the seed when it comes? I have almost never sterilized any seed, and sometimes get mold-eaten seed but rarely damping off in germinated plants. Would mold or potentially improper newbie sterilization pose a greater threat to these seeds?

Its cooling off here and my house is 24-29 degrees C, does the temperature need to be higher to achieve germination? Should I try to place them elevated over a heater to get bottom heat? I dont have heat mats or anything like that.
