Hi everyone.

lavandula - What your two nicely grown plants are, is Quesnelia marmorata which is a Quesnelia species.

Quesnelia 'Tim Plowman' is a cultivar of Quesnelia marmorata and although it looks similar to marmorata at first glance, it's the very much more exaggerated curl in the leaf ends of 'Tim Plowman' which distinguishes it from the species.

Although some leaves may vary; generally speaking the curl in the Ques. marmorata leaves is usually only about "half of one turn" (occasionally they only have a slight curve) compared to the curl on the leaf of 'Tim Plowman' which is usually a full turn and sometimes one and a quarter turns.

.........while in this plant, the leaf ends are almost straight, but neither have the exaggerated curve of the Ques. 'Tim Plowman'.

If you look at the pictures of 'Tim Plowman' on the Bromeliad Cultivar Register at http://registry.bsi.org/?genus=QUESNELIA&id=7974#7974 and compare them with your plant you will immediately see the difference.

If you go to the Florida Council of Bromeliad Societies (F.C.B.S.) site at http://fcbs.org/pictures.htm and go to the species Photo Index, you will find Ques. marmorata listed at number 12 and you will see the curve in the leaf ends does vary from plant to plant.

As for the red spotting you mention, this happens from time to time and can be influenced by a number of things with the main one being the amount of light the plant is receiving.
