Hello everyone,

I am considering a built in wall on one of my dining room walls, but would like advice on which wall to choose. I would like something similar to this (small or large in size is fine).

Currently, my dining room looks like this:

Any advice appreciated, thanks!!

I like the longer wall with the blue paintings, but not sure how the cabinetry would fit or look with those two small windows on either side.

It would look like a craftsman fireplace wall with cabinetry where the fire box usually is and nice. I'm wondering whether the room is wide enough for furniture on that wall.

The wall with the door wouldn't be symmetrical which is fine for a bookcase wall but probably not what you are looking for. You could put a window seat and skinny cupboards on the last wall but that would be disproportionate and again more like a reading nook or library than a dining room.

I think it would look great on the wall with the blue painting and two windows. And like Kathy Yata said, it would have a craftsman look. It would have to be shallow, more like an upper cabinet size. (12 inches) But I think it's a great idea for that room.

Agree if you do build, the window/blue painting wall is where it would possibly work. That said, it would be shallow and the current position of dining chair would hit the cabinet. If you move table farther toward opposite (wall or opening?) It looks like it would be off center to the big window. Will that bother you and also will change where the chandelier is if centered on table and then will probably not be centered in room. Just some things to consider. Do you need storage or just like the look of the proposed built in?

Thanks for the craftsman fireplace wall recommendation, this really helps me visualize what the space can look like. It will also be easier for me to explain to the contractor the look I am interested in.

Yes, I am looking for some storage cabinets, maybe a foot in width. Not too deep. Just to keep some glasses and some small plates etc etc...

I will move the dining table a little away from the wall and see if it looks off centered from the window and ceiling light.

Will look at more pics of the craftsman fireplace wall, to come up with a design and dimensions.

    Thanks!

I looked at some great pictures of the craftsman fireplace wall and would opinions on which cabinet selections go together on that long wall with the windows. I am planning to put up removable grasscloth wallpaper in a teal/greenish/blue color with the white /ivory/cream cabinets.

Which one of these looks good.

    A)

    B)

    c)

    D)

Do pics C and D, look like they belong as bedroom drawers rather than dining room? Just came to mind while uploading the pics.

    thanks,

I think I like A, the first look. The other pictures have too many drawers, not sure those fit in with the dining room look, unless of course you need the extra concealed storage.

I think it's a great idea, but I question if you have room for thus. Also, having a unit custom built us going to be very pricey.

We want to do something similar so I'm interested to hear how things go for you.

Thanks everyone for comments!!. Regarding space, I can move the table a bit away from the wall. The total length of the wall is 13' and the maximum cabinet depth can be 15-17". The height from the floor to the window is 6'. I understand custom built will be expensive. I have been looking for 6' glass cabinets with less depth, have found the Vitrine cabinet from Crate and Barrel, but depth is 18". So if I open the doors, it may cause a nuisance. Also they dont have a matching sideboard.

I agree the best placement is the wall with the blue artwork and high windows. You could incorporate the windows into the mill work of whatever built-in style you decide to go with.

If you want to have a shallow counter area and not just tower cabinets and shelving, I highly recommend going with some sort of granite or stone on the counter area (like in first inspiration pic) if you will use it as a buffet area to serve food or beverages from. Painted wood will not hold us as well, for food service.

Do you plan to keep that same table? I think you should move it forward more, so it's centered in front of the wall with the bookcase, leaving a clear path from the doorway. You may also consider relocating the bookcase to another spot in your home once you add the built-ins. The walls will look too closed in with furnishings on both walls. If you look at both of your inspiration photos, the built-ins are the only 'furniture' aside from the dining table, in the room which makes the space look larger and more open.

Have you built your cabinets yet? If not, here's some more inspiration!

Thanks for the inspiration!. I have decided the cabinets. Planning to put two on either side under the square windows. May leave the area under the painting empty or add the matching sideboard. If I leave the area empty, will change with a larger painting.

The cabinets are narrow in depth, which is what I was looking for.

Also planning to add removable adhesive grasscloth like wallpaper from spoonflower. I liked the teal color. Just ordered samples.

Will post pics with samples soon.

    Thanks!

These are the adhesive wallpaper samples. I am planning to select the bright teal sample , the one on the top.

love the idea of built in, but another thought is a built in that goes straight across and then add two art pieces above that are the same size and in a line with the windows. brings the windows into the design a bit more perhaps

@Me AGirl Thanks for asking. Yes, I went with the teal wallpaper, removed the painting and had custom built cabinets underneath the windows.

The cabinets have two large potted plants on top, so it balances out the asymmetrical look at the top.

Also the bookshelf is replaced, with a narrow sliding door cabinet / buffet.

    Enjoy!
