Pygmy Date Palm with trunk rot

Should I remove this Pygmy Date Palm because of the trunk rot or will it live a happy live regardless? I'm redoing the bed so if it's going to need to be removed I'd like to do it now. I'm in South Florida, Thanks!

That looks like a palm that's been hit with a weed whacker too many times. Pretty poor long term prognosis I'm afraid.

I would remove it. Do we know what caused the damage? Was it animal related possibly? Physical damage of some sort? These palms are common and cheap enough to be replaced. Palms do not repair their trunks as do other trees and I don't believe this palm has a chance in the long term.

I believe the cause was too much mulch. The previous owners only dumped mulch on top of mulch never removing the previous mulch. There's also loads of insects that look like black ants inside the trunk.

ANTS generally are the the CAUSE of the problem. They move one once there is a problem with other insect damage and the plant is already in decline.

BTW, when I said they were common and cheap, I did not all mean that in a disparaging manner; I LOVE THESE PALMS! One of top five favorite of palms.
