Steeds Holly and Chesapeake Holly differences? They look the same.

I bought several this year at a Home Depot store. A couple had the name Vigoro Holly steeds and a couple had another label that said Japanese Holly Chesapeake. But all of them looked identical to me. What are the differences?

(The plants with "Vigor Holly Steeds" didn't have any details about the plant, just the name. The other ones with the Chesapeake name had a different description label with all the info.)

This company is offering material under both names. In their pictures the 'Chesapeake' has a cupped leaf and the 'Steeds' a flat one. Next I would see if that distinction is generally true - if plants under the two names elsewhere also have that difference.

Thank you. I purchased 6 plants this year from a few Home Depot stores within the same time period (some say Chesapeake and some say Vigoro Holly Steed. However, I noticed the receipts describe all of them as the Vigor Holly Steed, and no receipt says Chesapeake.) I will look at each leaf up close to see which one is different (flat vs cupped).

Also, keep in mind that big box stores often have inaccurate or incomplete labels IME. So just because a labels says it is Chesapeake holly doesn't necessarily mean that it actually is.

why is this important ... if i might ask ...

care would be precisely the same ...

a little diversity in the planting .. in say leaf shape.. or whatever ... surely would be a plus ...

grower dude enters a contract with bigboxstore ... for say.. 5000 holly ... stuff happens ... he sends them 5000 pots of holly ... contract filled ... tags are interpretational .. lol ...

if you want to collect high grade precisely named plants ... you should buy from higher end sellers ... and pay the extra for your collection ...

otherwise.. if you are covering some ground.. and price matters ... so be it.. we have all bought from BBStore ... even if we never really got an ID ... it served our purpose ...

ps: in the hosta world.. same type of huge contracts to be filled ... and many of the mavens shop BBS ... just to find out.. if grower threw in some rarities.. just to get the proper number for sale ....

Hi there, I like to keep my plant info written so I don't forget what is planted where. I wasn't sure about these two labels because the hollies look the same to me and did want to ask about them. I will take a closeup look at the leaves when I have a chance because I am curious if all six hollies are the same.
