The pantry location is really cutting the kitchen in half and making the sink feel isolated. If you're doing uppers near the sink, don't have them be those towers like you have pictured right now. It makes the area feel very claustrophobic.

You're fridge is quite a distance from the sink and the cabs that rest on the counter take up too much counterspace, coming out almost to the edge. If they're there for a specific reason, then rethink other ways to do the same thing. If they're there for looks, trash 'em and go with regular wall cabinets.

You know what I hate about trendy kitchen design features? They very rarely make your life easier and often take up much needed space. With all the people and cooks in your family, concentrate on how the space works! And use the "kick myself" test. Ask "would I kick myself if I realized later that this kitchen design wasn't as convenient as I need it to be?"

This kitchen looks pretty good! What are you planning to use the base cabinet to the left of the sink for? I would put trash/recycling there and replace both of the end island cabinet with deep drawer units. (Definitely lose the roll-outs... swap for drawers.) If you truly like the cabinets sitting on the counters, great but as others have pointed out, you may really miss the useful counter space around the sink.

Thanks for the ideas. The island is the main prep area so we have the trash can on the island but it will pull toward the sink. We do not want a prep sink, on the island, we just want it to be work space.

The cabinets flanking the sink are appliance garages for breakfast coffee and toaster, etc. I’ll have to think about losing them. It makes it easier for the kids to reach everything without standing on the counter. We could make them skinnier, more like 12 or 15” deep. Or even 20” wide instead of 23”. And we do not prep near our sink now, we will prep and mix on the island. I guess I figured I have 7 feet of space in between them.

If I have all drawers where do cutting boards go?

You have about 18-20 inches of counter space on each side of the sink. Go to your current kitchen, put masking tape on each side of the sink and see if you have enough room for dirty dishes on one side and a dish rack on the other. That might help you make a decision, one way or another.

Also, is it possible that the appliance garage doors would stay up most of the time? They would at my house ;)
