I too have a dark fireplace mantel and stone. I suggest focusing on textures. A large mirror would lighten it up. I like to either go with gilt and then some large candelabras, gilt. Or all weathered white, the mirror and tall accessories, such as candelabras, tall things. You can mix in some greenery as well.

I would resurface as this is a large span of brick. Brick is too small of a size on this large wall. A dark stone tile would be beautiful!

Think about the original intent of the material used at the fireplace....the builder or architect was trying to work with features like the ceiling ( knotty pine ?) and the tall fireplace wall....the dark wall colors may just be fighting for domination and not pulling out the colors that are in the brick.....enhancing it.....post a couple brick and mantel photos so we can see the real color if you can. Resurfacing is ok, but it would be interesting to study the color that is already there. The wood floors and wood slanted ceiling are interesting but are getting lost.

I would recommend possibly changing out the piece of art above the fireplace and replace it with a large mirror in to bring light into the room, the current art pattern fights with thbrick pattern. if you do not like a mirror you can replace the art with a more subtle piece. I would then change the wall color to a softer but warm tone such as a moss green similar to the Ralph Lauren bathroom photo on our houzz photo
Zsinteriors. The green would still give you the warmth and boldness and make the fireplace brick standout without fighting it. What is the current wall color on rest of room?

Thanks for the good ideas. Many of the surrounding walls are a light olive color. We could try that instead of the red, then try a large mirror and some tall accessories.

I will try to get some close ups uploaded. The mantle is another thing I've thought of upgrading. It's a simple chunk of rough cedar. Maybe something in Brazilian walnut to pull in the flooring throughout the rest of the house? Or would that fight with the brick as well?

If the olive color is actually in the brick at all, or close to it, that would be good, as it would look better to just wrap that color around the room. You would be looking at the fireplace, not the walls.
Using Brazilian walnut, not rough, more smooth and contemporary for the mantel would be a nice idea and it may just make the fireplace upgraded enough to satisfy you. I think the current / modern artwork, from the photo, would be fine. It works with the modern look of the architecture of the room and would continue to add the color that you would lose if you paint out the red wall.
I feel that a mirror would detract from the original intention that I think the builder/architect had, to showcase the rough wall......a mirror would reflect everything else and would , in my opinion, be distracting/too "shiny" against the rough wall and interesting ceiling.

I think the fireplace is beautiful as is, especially combined with the beautiful wood ceiling. The fireplace should be the focal point of the room, but the dark paint on the walls diverts one's attention. A wall color that pulls out the darker brick color in the fireplace would enhance, rather than detract from, the fireplace.

Schroeder Design Group and derkacs, if you look at the adjoining wall to the left, that was an attempt at matching the lavender/grey color from the brick. It ended up being a pretty dark though. Maybe we'll try a lighter tone of that as well as the olive color.

The current paint looks olive....if you want to paint all walls, look at the richer tones in the brick for ideas. If there are no greens in the brick, that could change everything.
