Acer fireglow

last modified: 8 years ago

I have one in the middle of my lawn - planted it this year. Do they grow quickly? I’m dying to see it glowing, tall. How much am I expected to see it grow per year?

Fireglow does not grow as fast as some of the more popular red palmates such as bloodgood and red emperor. 12in/30cm per year at the most is what I have read. I bought one this year too.

12”! Oh my, I’m gutted. I guess i’ll Have to be patient. I have a Bloodgood too, that’s in my back garden. Bought it about 12” tall and in several months has put on quite a bit of height.

Im not familiar with Red Emperor. (Runs to google)

Red Emperor is officially registered as 'Emperor I'. That should help with your Googling :-)

'Fireglow' has leaves that are not as deeply divided as those of 'Bloodgood' (or Emp I) and of a different, more intense red (less purple) color. It is also much smaller in stature, only growing to about 1/2 to 2/3 the size of 'Bloodgood' and at a slower rate. It also holds its color in summer better than BG with less greening/bronzing in a hot summer climate.

FG is probably a better tree for a smaller sized garden than BG and has not suffered the dilution in quality due to poor propagation methods that BG has. I recommend it frequently for design clients.

    Thank you GardenGal

when the sun shines, FG really comes alive. I just sit and look at it’s beauty. I’m still glad I planted it. As I’m already getting pleasure from it.

I purchased a fireglow earlier this year, I truly wish I had gotten it a long time ago. Absolutely stunning this fall as the sun shines through it. Another outstanding tree is purple ghost. Both literally glow in the sun.

I agree, David. Wish I had planted mine years ago too! Fireglow was my first ever acer - I’m hooked now. Bought that earlier this year and now I have 7 other varieties, or is it 8? And guess what..... I’m lusting over more! There’s an acer that has beautiful red stems. It’s on my wish-list!

There are several different JM's with red bark, so you have a few to choose from :-) Also one with bright yellow bark ('Bihou') and one that starts yellow at the base, moving up to orange and finally finishing off in a flourish of red ('Japanese Sunrise').

It's important to know, however, that many of these colored bark Japanese maples (for whatever reason) are very prone to developing a bacterial blight, Pseudomonas syringae, that can be very disfiguring and even fatal to young trees.

Darren, I remember when I started only a few short years ago, November 2015 to be exact. I'm now approaching 50 different trees and I'm also still adding to my collection.

I have had Bihou since November 2015, I'm glad to say mine is doing great! My son has one also that's doing great, mine is in mostly shade with maybe 3 hours of sun where my son's is in full sun.
