cherry cabinets-keep or paint?

Should I keep these cabinets and add a white back splash and light countertop or paint them white? Not planning to change the layout. Already in process of getting all new stainless steel appliances.

As much as I love white cabs, I don't think I could bring myself to paint cherry ones; certainly not yours. I think they are beautiful.

I would keep them as is. They are beautiful, even if not as "in style" as white cabinets are. I think in the long run I would be happier, personally, changing only the countertops and backsplash. With that and the stainless steel appliances I think it will look lovely.

I wouldn’t paint them. Once you get the new appliances, countertop and backsplash in, your kitchen will be really lovely. Just a thought too, you might want to update the valances to something a little more interesting. Nothing fancy, just a pretty fabric or even a blind of some sort.

I agree with everyone else. If possible, when getting new counters, I'd make the two-level peninsula into a single level.

We just finished a kitchen reno with cherry cabinets so I say keep the cherry!

Would not paint...would update counter, wall paint, and back splash. you never know how long the white and grey trend will last....

    White isn’t a “trend”. Been around forever! It’s simply a preference. :-)

I would not paint them and that's mainly because I love the glass cabinets and they work well with the cherry. I'm not sure that they would make as big as a design impact as they do if they were painted white.

Google cherry cabinet kitchens and perhaps you can find some ideas that you like with respect to countertops and back splashes. Maybe look at changing your window treatments as well. The glass cabinets, for me. read contemporary but your window treatments don't. That's why I suggested to look at changing them as well.

Keep them as they are. That is some GORGEOUS wood!

Keep the cherry! I'd want that microwave higher. Can you at least modify/shorten the cabinet above the microwave to raise it?

Love the idea about taking out the bar height portion of the counter and leveling it off. Hadn’t considered that. I am thinking blinds may be better, maybe bamboo blinds? Yes we are already in the process of shortening the cabinets and moving the new microwave up higher.

I don't find your glass cabinets to be at all contemporary. So I'd have fun looking for less contemporary hardware.

I also think bamboo blinds are too casual for your lovely cabinets. If you don't like them bare, I'd look for a roman shade.

So nice to hear everyone chime in and say "no" to the paint. I painted mine and while I do not regret it, it does not work in every situation. With new appliances and countertops that all one level, this kitchen would be very nice.

I do think though removing the cabinet that holds the microwave and replacing with a hood with a chimney would not only add function but lighten the look and modernize it. I realize that it is hard to find a place for the microwave, but it might be worth a try.

I was hoping to have a vent hood but there is truly no where else for the microwave with the current layout so that I had to sacrifice. I had not considered no blinds or window treatments at all, would that look better? Any thoughts on painting just the island white or cream?

Any thoughts as to pendant lighting above the island?

    Agreed.

What is that in the corner of the peninsula - a TV? Lose it. :-) Or put it somewhere else. Take down the huge MW over the range and sell it. Get a nice small countertop MW and put it where the TV is. I would not remove the cabinet over the MW - storage space is more important to me. (But may not be to you.) Get a range that doesn't have that high back. A nice low profile hood, and lighten up that backsplash area. Some undercabinet lighting would look nice.

Gorgeous cabs, please keep as is and just change counter and BS. Love your stools. :)

I personally think your windows would be pretty bare.

I don't want to venture a 'pendant over the island opinion' without seeing a pulled back view of the space, but it might look nice.

Here's a couple photos I found showing bare mullioned double hungs. As a side note, one hung a pendant over the sink and one used a sconce.

I vote for no painting. I would try to ditch the micro and maybe paint or wall paper the inside of the glass cabinets. and def level the peninsula, with new counters and backsplash. if after these changes you want to paint then do it but the wood is beautiful.

Chess, lol. I am criminal too I guess. I have a TV in the corner of my peninsula (it's small and white and blends with my white cabinets and light counters) and I have the micro above my range. Mostly because when I remodeled, my youngest son was exactly counter height and would definitely have broken it in a hot minute if I left it within his reach.

Gorgeous cabinets. Don't paint them. A creamy stone counter and subway b/s will update the look completely. And yes, a single level penninsula with glass pendants.

also, do a pretty faux roman shade or full roman shade that is mounted above the window to make it look higher and larger

Great idea to consider a valance higher up - I have been unsure what to put in that space between the cabinets above the window
  • 8 years ago

rebeccamomof123, didn't say it was "criminal". :-) Heck I have a built-in desk in my kitchen with a pc/sound system right there, so I get the watch tv/video thing, believe me. But in her situation, it's taking up valuable counter space that would be better suited to a small MW so she could get rid of that monster one off the cabinets. I think over-the-range microwaves are one of the worst things to put in a kitchen - they don't do anything for ventilation, and they are usually much larger than is needed. That's just my opinion though. And it's worth the price paid of course. :-)
