I think roman shades would be a good idea since you have that ledge in the one space and just me but that red fireplace would need to go along with the useless shelves

That's a lot of "dark" there. If you want curtains for the purpose of dressing the windows only, you could get some nice rods and hang panels just on the ends. If it were my room I'd lighten things up. Paint the fireplace and the built-ins white or a lighter color and then get a panel with some simple stripes, nothing too bold. If you want to keep the red you can do the same but if you get dark panels it will look really dark in that room. Hope this helps a little.

I don't actually mind the red fireplace, but the dark wood and yellow paint is an issue. It looks like you have a bay window so not sure drapes would be the best bet. Roman shades would work better as Patricia suggested.

Thank you guys! I will definitely go with the Roman shades! My husband is about to refinish the bookshelves and mantle to match along with out staircase and adding cabinet doors as well. The house is definitely a lot lighter than the photos look. :)
