My first post, first adenium

I’ve been reading other posts here, trying to learn. I’m just sharing but will appreciate any care advice.

Got the plant this summer and it is still outside, temps in low 50’s at night but we do have a 48 coming up. I think I’ll bring it in starting then. Last few days temps have been in low 90’s so I have watered. Maybe I shouldn’t have

I bought the plant from a cactus and succulent grower, and they said I do not need to repot. The mix is their fast draining and the plant dries out to featherlight pretty quick.

I’d prefer a clay pot but suppose a better time to transplant would be spring.

If you enlarge you can see small new growth and a ladybug watching over. So nice to have a security guard on duty.

Hello Socks, nice to see you here! It’s a bit quiet on the forum at the moment, but hopefully Things will pick up once our new season starts next year. Lots of us have plants that go dormant during the cooler months. Mine do anyway, they’re looking a bit sad at the moment as leaves are shrivelling, and they look really sad. Hopefully I can get them through the winter once again. I only have 8 and they have struggled through thick and thin to get this far since sowing the seeds of the older ones several years ago. I started this forum as I thought adeniums needed one of their own rather than being lumped in together with the c/s! Hope to see you and your plants around :-)

So nice you have warm weather still in the 90's for your adenium. I agree it may be wise to start bringing it in at night but keep watering and keep putting it back out in the sun while your temps are warm enough. That is probably the easiest. Alternatively if you have a heating pad that is safe to set outside, you could put it beneath your plant and set a timer on it so it's only on after dark until morning. You could even drop a mini greenhouse over the plant just for the evenings like a cold frame but leave it open during the day. As you are in zone 10 it may even be sufficient protection through the entire winter and would also provide shelter from rain if you get a cooler, cloudy, wet spell.

Anyway, welcome and glad to have you join us! I hope your plant does well for you. If you enjoy it and ever want to try more, we'll encourage you to order some seed in the spring so you may explore the adventure of growing these interesting plants up from tiny babies. Whatever you decide to do, we're glad to help if we are able!

Oh, thank you for your kind reply and suggestion of how to leave it outside. I have been thinking about leaving it outside.

The nursery where I shop has overhead protection, and I doubt they bring them in for the winter.

Thank you, Gill. They are interesting plants. I’m in a Mediterranean zone where we get an occasional light frost. Id prefer to leave it out, but since it’s my first I decided to bring it in. It sits in a south window. The leaves are mostly green but leaning towards yellow.

You started the forum??!! I’m impressed! I remember your name, have “seen” you around the forums for some time. Thank you for your nice reply.

When I say started it, I meant “I asked GardenWeb for it before Houzz took over”. We needed to get ppl on board who would support a separate forum for adeniums,. Thankfully, lots of ppl responded to my request and that proved to the admin folks it was needed, the new site was included and the rest is history as they say :-)

I'm glad you did, Gill. We are all grateful and it's been very helpful to learn from the posts. I only started with Adeniums a little over a year ago and despite LOTS of research over the internet before I got my first plants or seeds, I admit that I have learned just as much from this forum as anywhere else. So, thank you Gill and everyone else who contributes and shares.

HERE HERE!

I was directed to this forum by the eBay seller whom I purchased my first Adenium seeds from. Once here (ummm...August 2016...?) I found a wealth of information and a friendly, wonderful group of people who answered questions, gave advice and seeds and even a couple of plants for cheap!

Once things started slowing down on this forum I found the Cacti $ Succulent forum. More friendly, helpful people and many (MANY!) more plants followed.

So hats off to Gill for asking GardenWeb and getting things rolling!

I do have a question though (way off topic). Is the "G" in your name pronounced as a hard "G" or a soft "G"?
