walnut butcher block counter top

We are renovating our kitchen in our second home which will be used as a rental. We would like to put in walnut butcher block counter tops. Does anyone have experience with this type of counter top. Does anyone know where to buy walnut butcher block in the Richmond, VA area? Thank you!

You have to have someone make them for you. Walnut is soft and probably won't make a very good countertop though.

Joseph, I just did a quick look at Boos site. Their products look amazing! Thanks for the suggestion!

    Hi,

I have ordered from these people three times, they do very good work, probably at a fraction of the cost of Boos. https://www.hardwood-lumber.com/

Wood slabs like this are very heavy, and shipping cost becomes a factor, local shop is best.Hardwood... was in a neighboring state, so shipping was only $200.

Thank you for the great suggestions! We should be ready to order something within the next couple of weeks. I need to get the final measurements.

I've had rentals, not sure if this is your first or not. But my 2 pennies say I would never put a beautiful wood counter in a rental unit. Most (but not all) renters don't care about your stuff like you do. So be prepared for it to possibly be annihilated. Cuts, gouges, burns, rot are all possible. If you know that and don't care, go for it. If you didn't know that, might wanna rethink it. :)

I was thinking exactly what beth09 said! I would be concerned getting such a nice easily damaged counter top for a rental home. Good luck with whatever you decide :)

Any thoughts on alternative counter tops. Something that is durable and cost effective, but nice as we will be using the property too. Thanks, everyone!

    Laminate........

Solid surface in a matte finish. It's the most forgiving. White if it would work with your cabinets (the darker colors will show scratches that are white). Couple different pics below with different cab colors.

It is stain proof, antiseptic, scratches can be buffed out, no etching, cracks can be easily repaired (as can chips, but I don't think that's common), no etching, quieter, warmer.

Beth09 Wow! Those photos are beautiful! We are going with white cabinets. Do you know who makes those cabinets? Also, where would I find solid surface counter tops? I want that exact kitchen! I am in search of cabinets right now. I am considering Home Depot, Loews and IKEA, but there are so many different types and styles. I mostly like simple, shaker style white cabinets. Thank you so much for the great suggestion and for the photos.

Do you know who makes those cabinets?

Info on the pic says they were custom made. But you can use this picture as an inspiration picture. Start looking through your yellow pages for custom cabinet makers. Also ask friends where they got their cabinets. If you are looking at big box stores, I would say Kraft Maid from Lowe's would be a good choice. However, price out custom, there are many on here who got custom for the same price or less as big box. And do you live near an Amish area? Some on here have gotten great custom Amish cabs at great prices. Again, ask around. And if you do a search on here, lots of very happy Ikea cabinet owners. It shouldn't be hard to find what you are looking for.

Also, where would I find solid surface counter tops?

Lowe's sell's LG Hi-Mac and Home Depot sells Corian around here. There are other brands as well. (Joseph Corlett could list them all, I don't know them all, as I am focused on Corian myself) Again, try looking at kitchen and flooring shops in your area. You can also go to the website of any brand and they should have a dealer locater. Now Joseph will say they are all the same. Maybe they are, but all I can say is, in researching (an insane amount) LG Hi-Mac "seems" to have an awful lot of cracking issues. Corian use only their trained fabricators so maybe that's why there are less issues.

Thank you so much for the great suggestion and for the photos.

You are very welcome, I'm glad I could be of help. :)

Worked with brooks, excellent. Also worked with the below and they did an excellent job for one of our clients in the walnut.
