Where are you in Texas? It's a big place. The overseeded lawns in San Antonio are fully in and mowed for the past several weeks.

Generally overseeding a southern lawn with a winter lawn is not a good idea. The problem comes in the spring when the rye remains green and growing when the underlying bermuda should be coming in. Delaying the onset of bermuda is the problem. So if you don't get any more germination with rye this season, you should just sit back and enjoy your winter.

@ dchall_san_antonio I am located in the Dallas metroplex. You advised me a while back to just get rid of the Bermuda all together and go with some more shade tolerant St. Augustine vs the poorly laid Bermuda the home builder put in.

Flash forward a few months.. The Bermuda was just a sad sight to see and this back yard as a whole is a tough case with uneven ground, slopes, various shade trees, and permanent sun blocking structures.

All to say, even though it doesn’t make much sense—in theory—to over-seed a sparse, unestablished Bermuda lawn, I didn’t really care.

To put my degree of “care” into context: I over-seeded November 7th. I know, I know, that’s just crazy. But I did, and believe it or not, I’m actually seeing some decent growth for being a lawn trolling amateur.

Well okay then. Next spring you might want to put a few pieces of St Augustine in the shady areas and let them take over for you. The Floratam variety of St Aug does extremely well in the full sun. There are other varieties that will do better in the shade. If you put the shady ones in the shade and the Floratam in the sunnier parts of the shade, they two varieties will blend together and wipe out the bermuda.
